Amos Alonzo Stagg Field at Doug Arthur Stadium

Home to Susquehanna’s national powerhouse River Hawk football and perennial conference-favorite track & field programs, Doug Arthur Stadium is where championship moments happen. This premier outdoor venue provides student-athletes with an electric game-day atmosphere, modern competition space and the pride of representing Susquehanna University in front of as many as 3,500 passionate fans.

The stadium features a state-of-the-art ProGrass playing surface, lights and a fully-LED video display board that very few institutions across the country can duplicate. It's running track is eight lanes wide and was recently resurfaced. Simply put, Doug Arthur Stadium and its amenities are designed to give student-athletes the opportunity to perform on the biggest stage, while representing some of the most competitive programs in NCAA Division III.

Located right on campus, the stadium also reflects Susquehanna’s commitment to providing student-athletes with the resources, support and environment needed to compete at a high level while enjoying the full collegiate experience.

The Stagg Legacy

College football pioneer and Hall of Famer Amos Alonzo Stagg Sr. served as an advisory coach at Susquehanna from 1947 to 1952. He coached alongside his son, Amos Alonzo Stagg Jr., who was head football coach.

Amos Alonzo Stagg Jr. had a long and distinguished career at Susquehanna spanning from 1935 to 1961. He recorded an unbeaten season in 1940 and again with his father in 1951. In addition to serving as football coach, Stagg Jr.'s tenure included service as Susquehanna's athletic director and as coach of the university's men's basketball, track & field and tennis programs.

Susquehanna's home turf is named Amos Alonzo Stagg Field at Doug Arthur Stadium, honoring the father-son duo's storied time at the school. They were inducted into the Susquehanna University Athletics Hall of Fame in 1968.

Honoring a Veteran

In 2018, Susquehanna dedicated the stadium in honor of Douglas Arthur '49, a generous philanthropist, dedicated alumnus and decorated veteran of World War II.

Prior to Arthur’s graduation in 1949, he served as an officer in the U.S. Air Force during the Second World War. He flew over 20 missions, but it was during a final humanitarian operation that his plane was shot down. Arthur was captured and held for 30 days as a prisoner of war at Camp Konan in what is now North Korea. For his distinguished service to his country, he earned the Purple Heart and the Air Medal with Oak Leaf Clusters.

During his time at Susquehanna, Arthur played with distinction on the football team for the legendary father-son coaching duo of Amos Alonzo Stagg Sr. and Amos Alonzo Stagg Jr. For his support of Susquehanna Athletics, Arthur later received the university’s Russell W. Gilbert Award in 1991 for longstanding loyalty to the university’s athletic program, and, in 2001, the football practice field was named in his honor.
