Aquatics Classes

Susquehanna University's 25-yard pool offers aquatics classes to public community members for a fee. Open swim hours are also offered during the fall and spring semesters for a separate fee. 

General public requirements to participate in Aquatics classes: 
  • Aquatics Class Registration $50 for 12 weeks for 1 day a week, or $75 for 12 weeks for 2 days a week.
    • Classes can be purchased online through HomeTown Ticketing
    • Checks can be payable to Susquehanna University and mailed to:

  • Signed and submitted Open Swim and Aquatics Class Release & Waiver
  • Agree to follow Participant Rules & Regulations (see below). 
Aquatic Exercise  

This class combines water walking and jogging with exercises designed to enhance core strength, endurance, flexibility, and balance. You'll engage in both shallow and deep-water exercises (deep water optional), working with and against the water's resistance to achieve positive fitness results. Suitable for a variety of fitness levels, this class can be tailored to your comfort and ability. 

Instructor Cathy Habegger, MS in Family Studies/Therapeutic Recreation from Virginia Tech, brings over 10 years of experience in aquatics, with a focus on aqua fitness. 

Class Guidelines 

For comfort and safety, we recommend aqua shoes or clean tennis shoes for foot protection, and a non-restrictive poly or nylon swim shirt to maintain warmth in cooler water. Bring your own towel. 

Consult your healthcare professional before beginning this exercise program.  

Participant Rules and Regulations 
  1. Registration must be presented upon request.  
  2. Participants agree to obey all published rules and regulations governing the use of the Garrett Sports Complex. It is further understood that participation is a privilege that may be modified or revoked at the discretion of Susquehanna University. 
  3. Participants also agree to discharge Susquehanna University and all its officials, agents, and employees from all claims, demands, actions, or causes of action, which may occur from using these facilities. Further, participants agree to hold the University harmless and fully indemnify the University from any action for damage to property of persons from acts of said participants, their families, or guest. 
  4. It is further understood that no commercial solicitation is permitted in the Garrett Sports Complex, or elsewhere on Susquehanna University property, without the express and prior written permissions of Susquehanna University authorities. This restriction includes any commercial lessons (swimming, personal training, etc.)  
Parking 

General parking is available in the lot behind 514 University Avenue, including EV charging stations.  

Participants may not park in the following spaces: 
  • Reserved for faculty and staff during university office hours, 
  • Marked as "NO PARKING," or 
  • Designated for individuals with disabilities unless displaying a valid handicapped plate or placard. 

Facilities  

The Aquatic Exercise class will take place in the Garrett Sports Complex swimming pool. Facilities available for use by participants include the locker room, changing area and showers. 

The pool temperature is regulated by the Susquehanna Aquatics Director. Any questions concerning the pool temperature may be directed to the Athletics department at (570) 372-4274.  

Refund Policy  

To receive a full refund, participants must notify the Athletic Department at least 24 hours before the class begins. Refunds will not be issued for withdrawals made after the class has started. Simply not attending a class does not qualify as a withdrawal. 

Cancelation of Classes 

The aquatics instructor is responsible for notifying participants if a class is canceled. 

Explanation of Levels 

Pre-K: Novice 
Children will develop safe pool practices; work on water adjustment, independence from parents and fundamental movements and basic jumping skills. Flotation device is used-teaching bubble aid. 

Pre-K: Learner 
Children are comfortable in the water and willingly enters the water when asked. By the end of this level, children can swim 25 yards with a teaching bubble aid and 5 yards without. Children are comfortable with jumping into water with or without assistance. All skills accomplished with flotation device – teaching bubble aid. 

Skills: 
  • Flutter kicking 
  • Floating 
  • Progressive paddle stroke - swing and turn 
  • Roll over in water, back to front and front to back 
  • Blowing bubbles through mouth and nose 
Level 1 - Beginner 
Students are dependent on the instructor for help. New or younger students to the program generally start here. They work on endurance by swimming on their front and back. By the end of this level, children swim across the pool on their front and back without assistance using a flotation device, deep water comfort and learning to put 'face in'. Skills achieved in this group are performed with a teaching bubble aid. Flotation device is used most of the time. 

Skills: 
  • Class routine and how to enter the water 
  • Push and glide off the wall on front with board and assistance 
  • Flutter kick on front with board, one length of pool 
  • Swing and turn on front (Front crawl arms), one length of pool 
  • Flutter kick on back, ½ length of pool 
  • Swing and turn on back (Back crawl arms), ½ length of pool 
  • Prone and supine float with assistance 
  • Blows bubbles while on board or during swing and turn (optional) 
  • Attempts to swim 10 yards without bubble (optional) 
Level 2 – Advanced Beginner 
Students are independent of the instructor for help with the beginner skills. They work on endurance by swimming on their front and back. By the end of this level, children swim across the pool on their front and back without assistance. Swimming without a floatation device, deep-water comfort and 'face in' swimming is required. Most skills achieved are performed without teaching bubble aid. Students possess an understanding of terminology related to skills being taught. Introduction to butterfly skills. Flotation device is used some of the time. 

Skills: 
  • Push and glide off the wall without the board – 5 yds (both front and back) 
  • Flutter kick, with board – 1 length of pool 
  • Swing and turn on front (front crawl arms) ½ length of pool 
  • Flutter kick, on back – 1 length of pool 
  • Swing and turn on back (back crawl arms), ½ length of pool 
  • Butterfly kick – one length of pool – w/ teaching bubble aid 
  • Butterfly arms – one length of pool – w/teaching bubble aid 
  • Prone and supine float – 5 seconds w/out assistance 
  • Bobbing 5 times or blowing bubbles (optional) 
  • Jumping without assistance into deep water (optional) 
Level 3 – Intermediate 
Students are independent of the instructor for help with the advanced beginner skills. This class continues work on the refinement of front crawl and back crawl, front dives and survival floating, and butterfly stroke, introduction to elementary backstroke. Skills are performed without the safety bubble. They have the ability to swim one length without the safety bubble – any stroke. 

Skills: 
  • Push and glide off wall without board becomes streamline – 5yds (both front and back) 
  • Swing and turn on front with flutter kick – becomes freestyle – 1 length 
  • Swing and turn on back with flutter kick – becomes backstroke – l length 
  • Butterfly kick (two lengths) and arms (one length) – whole stroke (one length) 
  • Elementary back kick – one length with or without teaching aid or float 
  • Elementary back arms – one length with or without teaching aid or float 
  • Refinement of rhythmic breathing 
  • Submerge and retrieve object in shallow end 
  • Prone and supine float – 10 seconds w/o assistance and w/o teaching aid 
  • Diving with assistance into deep water 
Level 4 – Advanced Intermediate 
Students are independent of the instructor with the intermediate skills. They work on perfection of skills for freestyle and backstroke. They continue to practice their butterfly and elementary backstroke. Introduction of breaststroke and learn how to tread water. Students start to possess endurance to swim for longer durations. All skills in this group are performed without a safety bubble. 

Skills: 
  • Swim Freestyle w/ rhythmic – 1-2 length 
  • Swim backstroke w/o looking for wall – 1-2 length 
  • Elementary back – 1 length 
  • Butterfly – ½ - 1 length 
  • Breaststroke Kick 
  • Breaststroke arms 
  • Lead arm side balance – ½ length (can be nose up or nose down) 
  • Survival float or back float in deep water 15 seconds 
  • Intro to treading water in deep end 
Level 5 – Swimmer 
Works on stroke refinement, endurance and incorporates competitive swimming techniques, flip turns, and introduction to individual medleys. Have endurance to swim for longer durations. Students completing this group are ready for the entry level on a swim team. 

Skills: 
  • Can swim three of the four competitive strips – freestyle, backstroke, butterfly or breaststroke 
  • Kick one length each competitive stroke – (may use a kick board) 
  • Streamline push-off (front and back) 
  • Bilateral breathing w/freestyle 
  • Sidestroke arms 
  • Swim on side with scissors kick 
  • Spatial awareness and body control – can perform a somersault in the water – need for flip turns 
  • Prone and supine balance – ½ length 
  • Lead arms side balance – one length – going from nose up to nose down 
  • Shallow starting into deep water 
  • Tread water – 30-60 seconds 
  • Surface dive in deep water 
Level 6 – Advanced Swimmer 
Works on intense stroke refinement, racing starts and turns as well as endurance workouts. Students completing this group are ready to be on a swim team or read for lifeguard training class. 

Skills: 
  • Kick two lengths each competitive stroke- w/o kick boards – looking for balance and ease 
  • Swim two lengths on 3 out of 4 competitive strokes 
  • Perform one length of each stroke – whole stroke – continuous – individual medley 
  • Use of training aids – pull buoy, fins 
  • Race start into deep water – streamline glide and swim any stroke 
  • Flip turn while swimming on front and back 
  • Surface dive in deep water retrieve object 
  • Tread water – 5 minutes 
  • Basic safety rules for pool 
  • Reaching assistant rescue
