WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Susquehanna University's sophomore
Erin Ferguson (Mount Laurel, N.J./Seneca) made a
game-high nine saves, including three with no time remaining, to
help Susquehanna hold on to a 2-1 win at The Catholic University of
America in the Landmark Conference field hockey semifinals at
Cardinal Stadium on Nov. 4.
SU (10-8 overall) is now one win away from claiming its first
Landmark championship. This year, the Landmark champion will be
granted an automatic invitation to the NCAA Division III
championships for the first time.
Catholic (11-6 overall) trailed by one goal when it drew a
penalty corner with no time remaining. That left the Cardinals with
one more possession to try to tie the game, but
Ferguson and the Crusaders defense shut the door.
A Cardinals foul ended the possession and the game.
After a scoreless first half, SU's senior forward Andrea
Fiori (West Trenton, N.J./Lawrenceville) opened the
scoring in the 42nd minute with an unassisted marker.
Fiori leads the 2009 Crusaders with 11 goals
and 24 points.
Freshman midfielder Ally Bradley (Jamison, Pa./Central
Bucks South) then made the score 2-0 with an unassisted
goal in the 60th minute following a scramble in front of the
Catholic cage.
Catholic's lone goal came with just 4 minutes, 33 seconds to
play when a shot got past Ferguson and just inside
the right post, setting the stage for the final dramatics.
The Crusaders' sophomore midfielder Diana Mask
(Wilmington, Del./Mount Pleasant) made an important
defensive save in the 51st minute.
SU is the Landmark's No. 3 seed. No. 1-seeded and nationally
ranked No. 18 Juniata College (16-3 overall) defeated fourth-seeded
Drew University (12-8 overall), 4-1, in the other conference
semifinal to set the stage for an SU-Juniata championship game.
Juniata has won the last and only two Landmark field hockey
championships. The Eagles defeated Susquehanna, 2-1, in the
conference semifinals last year.
Juniata topped the Crusaders in the regular season this year,
2-0, on Oct. 7.
Next Game: Saturday, Nov. 7, at #18 Juniata (Landmark
Conference championship game), 2 p.m.
