HUNTINGDON, Pa. -- Susquehanna University's sophomore
guard/forward Jessica Zigarelli (Warren, N.J./Watchung
Hills Regional) and junior guard Rachael Hughes
(Gordon, Pa./North Schuylkill) both scored a team-high 12
points, but Susquehanna lost a Landmark Conference women's
basketball game at Juniata College, 75-59, at Memorial Gymnasium on
Dec. 5. The game was both teams' 2009-10 Landmark opener.
Zigarelli added six rebounds and two assists
for SU (3-3, 0-1 Landmark), while Hughes had four
rebounds, two steals and a team-high three assists.
Junior forward Jen Hnatuck (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Trinity HS) led
Juniata (4-2, 1-0 Landmark) with game-highs of 20 points and nine
rebounds.
The Crusaders actually led, 12-8, with 13 minutes, 17 seconds to
play in the first half, but Juniata scored the next 11 points to
take a lead that it would never let go. The Eagles led, 43-35, at
halftime and by as many as 20 points with 2:35 left in the game.
Senior forward Samantha Jansson (Cumbola, Pa./Nativity
B.V.M.) was the other Crusader to score in double figures.
Jansson notched 10 points to go with five rebounds
and two assists. Teammate and junior forward/center
Samantha Cartwright (Cranford, N.J./Cranford)
grabbed a team-high seven rebounds and made a team-high three
steals as part of a five-point night.
Junior guard Erika Barron (Tamaqua, Pa./Tamaqua
Area) led SU with two three-pointers on her way to eight
points and two assists.
Juniata's sophomore guard Ashton Banktos (York, Pa./York
Catholic) scored 13 points and added three boards, two steals and a
game-high five assists. Teammate and senior forward Kelly Rotan
(Atco, N.J./Hammonton) registered 11 points, five rebounds and a
game-high five steals.
SU held the rebounding advantage, 36-34, but Juniata scored 34
points off of turnovers to Susquehanna's 12.
