WILKES-BARRE, Pa. -- Susquehanna University's junior guard
Rachael Hughes (Gordon, Pa./North Schuylkill)
recorded a team-high 13 points and a game-high two blocks to lead
visiting Susquehanna past Wilkes University, 55-40, in a
non-conference women's basketball game at the Arnaud C. Marts
Center on Dec. 9.
SU (5-3 overall) trailed Wilkes (2-7 overall) for the majority of
the first half, but took the lead for good at 19-17 with five
minutes left and went into halftime with a 28-21 advantage.
Hughes shot six of 10 from the floor, including
one three-pointer. She also pulled down five rebounds.
Sophomore guard/forward Jessica Zigarelli (Warren,
N.J./Watchung Hills Regional) and senior forward
Samantha Jansson (Cumbola, Pa./Nativity B.V.M.)
each had 10 points for Susquehanna. Zigarelli
tallied six boards and gave SU its first lead with a layup.
Jansson tied a game-high with seven rebounds and
added two assists. She also made a game-high five free throws (on
six shots).
Crusaders junior guard Erika Barron (Tamaqua, Pa./Tamaqua
Area) notched a game-high-tying three steals and also had
three assists. Teammate and sophomore forward Jennifer
Butts (Frackville, Pa./North Schuylkill) also grabbed
seven boards, including a game-high five on the offensive side.
Wilkes' freshman guard/forward Megan Kazmerski (Kingston,
Pa./Redeemer) led all players with 15 points and also tied a
game-high with seven rebounds. Junior guard/forward Brittany Ely
(Montrose, Pa./Montrose) had a game-high-tying three steals, while
teammate and freshman guard Amanda Pawlowski (Nanticoke,
Pa./Redeemer) had a game-high three assists.
Susquehanna held the Colonels to 31.5-percent shooting from the
field. Wilkes only went to the free-throw line five times.
SU held the advantage in rebounds, 52-34.
