WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. -- Susquehanna University's junior
B.J. Merriam (Voorhees, N.J./Eastern Regional)
stopped a game-high three shots, but visiting Susquehanna (1-4-0
overall) lost, 3-0, to Lycoming College in a non-conference men's
soccer game at Robert L. Shangraw Athletic Complex on Sept. 11.
Lycoming (3-1-0 overall) held a 1-0 advantage in this 2009
edition of the "Battle of the Boot" before capitalizing on a
penalty kick in the 81st minute and netting another goal six
minutes later for the final score.
SU had back-to-back golden opportunities in the first half to
score the game's opening goal but missed both, heading a pass off
the cross bar on an open net and sailing a shot just inches high 25
seconds later.
Freshman goalkeeper Pat Horan (Sutton, Mass./Worcester
Academy) relieved Merriam in the 81st
minute to face the penalty kick. Horan played the
final 9 minutes, 4 seconds.
Junior forward Jim Robertiello (Chester, N.J./West
Morris Mendham) fired a team-high two shots on goal for
the Crusaders, who handed the "Boot"--a bronzed and mounted
soccer-shoe trophy that is annually played for between both
teams--over to Lycoming.
This is the first win for the Warriors against Susquehanna since
2003.
Next Game: Tuesday, Sept. 15, vs. Misericordia
(non-conference game), 7 p.m.
