SELINSGROVE, Pa. -- Susquehanna University's sophomore guard
Spenser Spencer (Seattle, Wash./Lakeside) recorded
a game-high 17 points to help Susquehanna beat visiting Moravian
College, 71-63, in a Landmark Conference men's basketball game at
Orlando W. Houts Gymnasium on Jan. 15.
Spencer also handed out three assists and made
all three of his attempts from the free-throw line.
Susquehanna (9-6, 2-2 Landmark) jumped out to a 5-0 lead to start
the game before Moravian (4-10, 1-3 Landmark) scored six unanswered
points to go up, 6-5, with 17 minutes, 11 seconds left in the half.
Over the next 9:03, the game changed leads three times and was
tied four more. After the final tie of the half at 21, SU
went on a 17-9 run to take a 38-30 lead into the break.
SU's senior guard Bryan Majors (Harrisburg,
Pa./Harrisburg) dished out a game-high four assists and
also scored six points. Majors made a game-high
five steals and is now only one steal away from tying the career
record at Susquehanna (229 by Lloyd "Tres" Wolf '94). Wolf played
at SU from the 1990-91 season to 1993-94.
Teammate and junior forward Hunter McKain (Ligonier,
Pa./Shady Side Academy) tied a game-high with two blocked
shots. McKain also snagged seven boards and added
eight points, including an alley-oop dunk on a pass from
Spencer with 3:11 remaining in the first half.
SU's freshman forward Harvey Pannell (Bloomfield,
Conn./St. Thomas More) pulled down a team-high eight
rebounds and scored 11 points, while junior guard Rob Estep
(York, Pa./West York) notched 12 points for the
Crusaders.
Susquehanna opened the second half on a 10-0 run to build its
largest lead at 48-30 before the Greyhounds scored their first
basket of the half with 15:21 remaining. Moravian was able to cut
the lead to 64-56 with 2:52 left but could only manage to get one
point closer the rest of the contest.
Moravian was led by freshman guard Nnamdi Njoku (Westampton,
N.J./Rancocas Valley Regional), who tallied a team-high 16 points
on five of 10 shooting from the field. Njoku also recorded a
team-high three assists. Teammate and junior center Chris Cullen
(East Islip, N.Y./East Islip) led all players with 12 rebounds and
added 13 points and two blocks.
Susquehanna snagged 14 steals as a team and forced 23 turnovers.
They also held the edge in free throws, 21-for-28 to Moravian's
8-for-10. The Greyhounds however, outrebounded SU, 36-26.
