SELINSGROVE, Pa. -- Susquehanna University's senior guard
Ashley Watkins (La Habra Heights, Calif./Rosary)
tallied a game-high 14 points, but Susquehanna fell to the
nationally ranked No. 19 visitors from Moravian College, 70-53, in
a Landmark Conference women's basketball game at Orlando W. Houts
Gymnasium on Jan. 15.
Watkins, who came off the bench and played 22
minutes, also made a game-high eight free throws (on 10 attempts)
and dished out a team-high-tying two assists. She made three of her
five attempts from the field.
SU (7-8, 1-3 Landmark) held its largest lead with the first basket
made in the game, but Moravian (12-2, 4-0 Landmark) responded with
a quick three-pointer to go up, 3-2.
Susquehanna regained the lead, 12-11, with 7 minutes, 23 seconds
left in the half, but that was the last time it led in the contest.
The Greyhounds tied the score at 12 on a free throw, and then went
on a 14-5 run to go into halftime with a 26-17 advantage.
SU's sophomore guard/forward Jessica Zigarelli (Warren,
N.J./Watchung Hills Regional) snagged a game- and
career-high 16 rebounds, while teammate and junior guard
Erika Barron (Tamaqua, Pa./Tamaqua Area) chipped
in eight points, four boards and two assists.
Barron made two of Susquehanna's three
three-pointers in the game.
Crusaders junior guard Rachael Hughes (Gordon, Pa./North
Schuylkill) added 11 points and three rebounds.
Hughes scored the Crusaders' first seven points
of the second half, but the team could never cut the lead to less
than six points the rest of the way.
After Moravian sank a pair of free throws to make the score 34-24
with 17 minutes left in the game, it went on a 21-9 run over the
next 9:43 to build the lead to 55-33.
The Crusaders were able to cut the lead to 61-49 with 3:15 left
on a pair of Watkins free throws, but that's the
closest they would get for the remainder of the game.
Moravian was led by senior guard Kate Harrison (Cold Spring
Harbor, N.Y./Cold Spring Harbor) who notched team-highs of 13
points and 11 rebounds. Teammate and senior forward Kirsty Stearns
(East Norwich, N.Y./Oyster Bay) tied team-highs with two assists
and two blocked shots. Stearns also chipped in 10 points. Junior
guard/forward Emily Smith (East Stroudsburg, Pa./East Stroudsburg
South) also had two assists and scored 12 points, while senior
forward Alyssa Bisci (Easton, Pa./Easton) snagged a game-high three
steals. Sophomore forward Alexandra Blair (Hellertown,
Pa./Bethlehem Catholic) recorded two blocks.
Susquehanna outrebounded the Greyhounds, 48-37, including 14 of
the offensive variety, but only shot 32.2 percent from the field
(19-for-59). Moravian was nearly perfect from the line, making 18
of its 20 attempts.
