SELINSGROVE, Pa. -- Susquehanna University's junior
forward/center Samantha Cartwright (Cranford,
N.J./Cranford) recorded a double-double of a game-high 17
points and 12 rebounds, but host Susquehanna lost a Landmark
Conference women's basketball game to nationally ranked No. 9 The
University of Scranton, 60-52, at Orlando W. Houts Gymnasium on
Jan. 16.
SU (7-9, 1-4 Landmark) trailed, 33-20, at halftime but chipped
away throughout the second half to cut the Scranton (12-2, 4-1
Landmark) lead to 52-51 after a Cartwright layup
with 3 minutes, 28 seconds left in the game.
The Crusaders took three shots after that layup that would have
given them the lead but missed each time, twice on close layups and
once from three-point range with just 1:28 left.
Susquehanna started to foul in the last 1:01 in an attempt to
prolong the game, but the Lady Royals made all six of their free
throws over that final stretch to put the game away.
Cartwright's 17 points are a career-high. The
12 rebounds tie a career-high.
Teammate and sophomore guard/forward Jessica Zigarelli
(Warren, N.J./Watchung Hills Regional) pulled down 10
rebounds and added a game-high-tying three steals and two assists.
SU's junior guard Rachael Hughes (Gordon, Pa./North
Schuylkill) also had two assists to go with nine points
and five boards. Junior guard Erika Barron (Tamaqua,
Pa./Tamaqua Area) had three points, two rebounds and two
assists as well.
Scranton's junior guard Megan Kopecki (Millington, N.J./Watchung
Hills Regional) scored a team-high 15 points (all in the first
half) and added seven boards. Kopecki made a game-high three shots
from long range (on four attempts). Freshman forward Tayler
Pallotta (Dunmore, Pa./Dunmore) snagged a team-high nine rebounds,
blocked a game-high two shots and scored seven points.
Lady Royals senior guard Ryan Mooney (Spring City, Pa./Pius X)
scored nine points and added eight rebounds, two steals and two
assists. Teammate and senior center Molly Klusek (Philadelphia,
Pa./Archbishop Carroll) made three steals as part of a six-rebound
day, though she didn't score. Sophomore forward Sarah Gage
(Ledgewood, N.J./Roxbury) had six points, three rebounds and two
assists.
Scranton held a 48-44 rebounding advantage for the game and made
33.3 percent of its field goals to SU's 31.8.
The Crusaders went 1-for-8 from three-point range, while
Scranton went 7-for-13.
