LANCASTER, Pa. -- Susquehanna University's freshman forward
J.T. Wilson (Sparta, N.J./Pope John XXIII
Regional) scored a team-high 22 points and tied for the
team-high with six rebounds, but Susquehanna fell to host and
nationally ranked No. 14 Franklin & Marshall College, 87-80, in
a non-conference men's basketball game in the first round of the
Sponaugle New Year's Tournament at Mayser Gymnasium on Jan. 2.
SU (6-5 overall) trailed Franklin & Marshall (7-2 overall)
by just four points with 2 minutes, 34 seconds left in the game
after a Wilson three-pointer, but the Diplomats
made 11 of 13 free throws down the stretch to keep the Crusaders at
bay.
Wilson made a game-high four three-pointers.
Teammate and senior guard Bryan Majors (Harrisburg,
Pa./Harrisburg) poured in 17 points and added two
rebounds, a team-high four assists and a game-high three steals.
Sophomore guard Spenser Spencer (Seattle,
Wash./Lakeside) and freshman guard/forward Harvey
Pannell (Bloomfield, Conn./St. Thomas More) were the other
Crusaders to score in double figures with 13 and 11 points,
respectively. Spencer had three assists, two
rebounds and two steals, while Pannell tied
Wilson with six boards and added two assists.
F&M's sophomore guard Georgio Milligan (Spring Valley,
N.Y./Don Bosco Prep) led all players with 23 points and added three
rebounds and a game-high five assists. Teammate and junior forward
Mike Baker (Maryland Heights, Mo./Whitfield) pulled down a
game-high 13 rebounds to go with 11 points. Junior forward James
McNally (Bridgewater, N.J./Bridgewater-Raritan Regional) scored 18
points and grabbed seven boards.
SU led this game by as many as four points early in the first
half and held the lead for the final time, 45-44, early in the
second.
In the other first-round game of this tournament, Manhattanville
College (6-5 overall) defeated Brooklyn College (5-4 overall),
71-65. Susquehanna will now face Brooklyn in the consolation game
on Jan. 3 at 6 p.m., while Manhattanville will meet F&M in the
championship at 8 p.m. that day.
