MADISON, N.J. -- Susquehanna University's senior guard
Ashley Watkins (La Habra Heights, Calif./Rosary)
scored a game-high 13 points and dished out a team-high four
assists to lead visiting Susquehanna to a 66-55 Landmark Conference
women's basketball win over Drew University at Baldwin Gymnasium on
Jan. 22.
Watkins made all seven of her free throws, as
SU (8-9, 2-4 Landmark) went to the charity stripe 27 times to just
seven trips for Drew (10-5, 2-4 Landmark). She also grabbed four
rebounds.
Susquehanna fought back from an early 14-4 deficit to lead,
30-28, at halftime.
The Crusaders steadily pulled away from there. A Drew layup did
pull the score to 57-48 with exactly two minutes left, but a
three-pointer by junior guard Erika Barron (Tamaqua,
Pa./Tamaqua Area) soon after pushed the lead back out to
double-digits and served as the beginning of the end.
The Crusaders led by as many as 14 points with 1:13 to play
after the Rangers started to foul in an attempt to prolong the
game.
Barron scored 12 points and added four rebounds
and three assists. Teammate and sophomore guard/forward
Jessica Zigarelli (Warren, N.J./Watchung Hills
Regional) pulled down a game-high nine boards to go with
six points and two assists.
SU's junior forward/center Samantha Cartwright
(Cranford, N.J./Cranford) made a game-high four steals as
part of a four-point, five-rebound effort. Sophomore forward
Jennifer Butts (Frackville, Pa./North Schuylkill)
registered seven points, three rebounds and a team-high two blocked
shots in just 15 minutes.
Freshman forward/center Eden Blazovic (Lake Hopatcong,
N.J./Butler HS) led the Rangers with 12 points and added a
team-high-tying eight boards and a game-high four blocked shots.
Teammate and sophomore guard Katherine Luby (Old Saybrook,
Conn./Choate Rosemary Hall) scored 11 points on the strength of a
game-high three three-pointers (on six attempts) and added four
rebounds.
Drew's junior forward Jessica Reid (Nazareth, Pa./Nazareth Area)
tied Blazovic with eight boards and scored four points. Sophomore
guard Danielle Barber (Cape May Court House, N.J./Middle Twp.)
handed out a game-high five assists, scored nine points and made a
team-high-tying two steals. Sophomore guard/forward Victoria Ault
(Middletown, N.J./Mater Dei) had two steals as well.
