LANCASTER, Pa. -- Susquehanna University's senior forward and
all-tournament honoree Marcus Burke (Hyde Park,
Mass./Brimmer and May) scored 21 points and pulled down a
game- and career-high 17 rebounds to lead Susquehanna University
past Brooklyn College, 92-76, in Franklin & Marshall College's
Sponaugle New Year's Tournament consolation game at Mayser
Gymnasium on Jan. 3.
Burke made eight of 11 field goals in this game
and added a game-high tying four steals. A game-high seven of his
rebounds came on the offensive end, as SU (7-5 overall) tallied 44
total boards to 37 for Brooklyn (5-5 overall).
Susquehanna's sophomore guard Spenser Spencer (Seattle,
Wash./Lakeside) poured in an impressive game- and
career-high 37 points on the strength of a game-high six
three-pointers. Spenser made 13 of 24 field goals,
including a 6-for-10 performance from long range. He also grabbed
six rebounds, handed out four assists and made three steals.
Teammate and senior guard Bryan Majors (Harrisburg,
Pa./Harrisburg) dished out a game-high 10 assists for the
second time this season and added two points and four steals.
Freshman guard/forward Harvey Pannell (Bloomfield,
Conn./St. Thomas More) and freshman forward J.T.
Wilson (Sparta, N.J./Pope John XXIII Regional) were the
other Crusaders to score in double figures.
Pannell had 16 points, five rebounds and two
steals, while Wilson tallied 14 points, nine
boards and three assists.
Brooklyn's junior guard Ahmad Hemingway (Brooklyn, N.Y./Curtis)
came off the bench to score a team-high 20 points and added seven
rebounds. Hemingway made a team-high two three-pointers (on six
attempts).
Senior forward Rich Jean-Baptiste (Queens, N.Y./St. John's Prep)
and sophomore guard Tyshawn Russell (Jamaica, N.Y./Holy Cross HS)
both scored 17 points for the Bulldogs. Jean-Baptiste also had four
assists and team-highs of nine rebounds and three steals, and
Russell had two steals.
Senior guard Thomas Guerin (Brooklyn, N.Y./Saint Edmund Prep)
led the Bulldogs with five assists and added eight points, three
rebounds and a game-high three blocked shots.
The score was tied at 34 through halftime before Brooklyn took a
five-point lead twice during the early part of the second period.
The Bulldogs enjoyed their final lead at 50-49 with 14 minutes,
25 seconds left. The Crusaders took control from there, going on a
12-6 run to take a 62-55 lead with 9:28 to play.
Brooklyn would get no closer than four points the rest of the
way, as SU led by as many as 20 points before it was all said and
done.
