WAYNE, N.J. -- Susquehanna University's sophomore guard/forward
and all-tournament honoree Jessica Zigarelli (Warren,
N.J./Watchung Hills Regional) recorded her second straight
double-double, but Susquehanna lost to host and nationally ranked
No. 13 William Paterson University, 69-44, in the Residence Inn
Winter Classic championship game at Recreation Center on Jan. 3.
Zigarelli registered game-highs of 19 points
and 12 rebounds against William Paterson (13-0 overall). She was
the lone SU (6-6 overall) player to notch double figures in either
category, though the Crusaders did hold the game's edge in
rebounds, 42-40.
Zigarelli made eight of 14 field goals and
three of five free throws. Teammate and junior guard Erika
Barron (Tamaqua, Pa./Tamaqua Area) led all players with
four assists and added five points and four rebounds. SU's junior
guard Rachael Hughes (Gordon, Pa./North
Schuylkill) blocked a game-high two shots and added two
points and three boards, while sophomore guard/forward
Samantha Pelletier (Harwinton, Conn./Lewis S.
Mills) made a team-high two steals to go with two points
and four boards in just 13 minutes.
William Paterson's senior guard Julie Haledjian (Montvale,
N.J./Pascack Hills) notched a team-high 18 points and three assists
and added six rebounds and three steals. Fellow senior guard Elisa
Brown (Norwalk, Conn./Norwalk) led the Pioneers with nine rebounds
and had 12 points and a game-high four steals. Brown made a
game-high two three-pointers (on four attempts).
The Crusaders turned the ball over 25 times to just nine for
William Paterson. SU's turnovers led to 28 Pioneers points, while
Susquehanna capitalized for just eight points off of turnovers.
William Paterson scored the game's first four points and never
trailed. The score was 28-23 at halftime.
