SELINSGROVE, Pa. -- Susquehanna University's senior forward
Marcus Burke (Hyde Park, Mass./Brimmer and May)
pulled down a career-high 18 rebounds and scored a game-high 19
points to lead host Susquehanna past Goucher College, 76-65, in a
Landmark Conference men's basketball game at Orlando W. Houts
Gymnasium on Jan. 30.
Burke also had game-highs with four steals and 11
made free-throws (on 17 attempts). His six offensive rebounds
topped Goucher's total as a team. Goucher (6-13, 4-5 Landmark) had
five offensive boards in the game.
Susquehanna (12-8, 5-4 Landmark) jumped out to a 7-2 lead over the
first 1 minute, 50 seconds of the game, but Goucher answered with
five straight points to tie the score. A Burke
free throw gave the Crusaders their last lead of the half at 8-7.
The game went back-and-forth for the remainder of the half, as
Goucher took a slim 41-40 lead into the break.
SU's sophomore guard Spenser Spencer (Seattle,
Wash./Lakeside) dished out a game-high six assists and
tallied 13 points. Teammate and freshman forward Harvey
Pannell (Bloomfield, Conn./St. Thomas More) chipped in 14
points, while junior forward Hunter McKain (Ligonier,
Pa./Shady Side Academy) added 12 points and four boards.
McKain was 5-for-7 from the field, including an
alley-oop layup off a pass from Spencer.
The second half began where the first half left off, but
Susquehanna held the lead for the rest of the game. Goucher brought
the score to within three points, 67-64, with 3:53 left, but a
Spencer three-pointer and a pair of made
free-throws by senior guard Bryan Majors (Harrisburg,
Pa./Harrisburg) put the game out of reach.
Goucher was led by sophomore forward Kyle Gladden (Baltimore,
Md./Lansdowne), who notched a team-high 17 points on five of seven
from the floor and 7-for-10 from the line. Sophomore guard Shane
Yambor (Burtonsville, Md./Paint Branch) grabbed a team-high eight
rebounds and added 15 points. Yambor also had a team-high-tying
three assists. Teammate and freshman guard Dorian Green (Baltimore,
Md./Cardinal Gibbons) also had three assists, while junior guard
Micah Perry (Silver Spring, Md./Springbrook) chipped in 12 points
on 4-for-12 shooting from three-point range.
Susquehanna held the edge in rebounds, 37-26, and shot 51
percent from the field.
