SELINSGROVE, Pa. -- Susquehanna University's sophomore
guard/forward Jessica Zigarelli (Warren, N.J./Watchung
Hills Regional) tallied a game-high 12 points and added
six rebounds to help Susquehanna top visiting Goucher College,
55-42, in a Landmark Conference women's basketball game at Orlando
W. Houts Gymnasium on Jan. 30.
Zigarelli made a game-high-tying four field goals
and was a perfect 4-for-4 from the free-throw line.
Susquehanna (11-9, 5-4 Landmark) never trailed in the game and
jumped out to an 8-0 start before Goucher (5-14, 1-8 Landmark)
netted its first basket 2 minutes, 58 seconds into the contest.
Goucher was able to cut the score to 24-19 with 1:18 remaining in
the half, but the Crusaders answered with a layup just 25 seconds
left before halftime.
SU's junior forward/center Samantha Cartwright (Cranford,
N.J./Cranford) led all players with 12 rebounds and added
eight points. Cartwright also made a
game-high-tying two steals. Teammate and junior guard Erika
Barron (Tamaqua, Pa./Tamaqua Area) also had two steals to
go along with nine points and four boards.
Junior guard Rachael Hughes (Gordon, Pa./North
Schuylkill) handed out a game-high-tying two assists,
while also notching six points and four boards. Senior guard
Ashley Watkins (La Habra Heights, Calif./Rosary)
also dished out two assists for the Crusaders.
Susquehanna used a 17-7 run over the first 10:45 of the second half
to build its largest lead at 43-26. Goucher only made two field
goals over the final 7:51 of the game.
Goucher was led by senior forward Amber Smith (Baltimore,
Md./Institute of Notre Dame) and sophomore guard/forward Elizabeth
von Ende (Leawood, Kan./American Hebrew Academy), who each had nine
points and six rebounds. Fellow sophomore guard/forward Kiara
Doughty (Salisbury, Md./Wicomico) also pulled down six boards and
tied a game-high with two steals. Sophomore forward Allie Russo
(Bethesda, Md./Bethesda-Chevy Chase) made two steals, while
freshman guard Jaclyn Kellon (Cleveland Heights, Ohio/St. Peter
Chanel) handed out two assists.
Susquehanna held Goucher to just 28-percent shooting from the
floor (14-for-50) and forced 20 turnovers. The Crusaders made 23 of
their 51 attempts from the field.
