TOWSON, Md. -- Susquehanna University's senior forward
Marcus Burke (Hyde Park, Mass./Brimmer and May)
pulled down a team-high nine rebounds and scored a team-high-tying
11 points, but visiting Susquehanna lost to Goucher College, 70-64,
in a Landmark Conference men's basketball game at Decker Sports and
Recreation Center on Jan. 8.
SU (7-6, 0-2 Landmark) trailed just 54-53 with 7 minutes, 9
seconds left in the game before Goucher (3-8, 1-1 Landmark)
steadily pulled away, leading by as many as eight points for the
second time in the half before the game was over.
The Crusaders did get the game to within two possessions at
65-61 with 1:25 to play, but the Gophers, despite three consecutive
late missed free throws, scored the next three points to go up by
seven with just 31 seconds remaining.
Susquehanna missed a few costly free throws, failing on three of
four in the last 1:15, including two on the front end of
one-and-one chances.
SU's last two free-throw misses were rebounded by Goucher's
sophomore forward Kyle Gladden (Baltimore, Md./Landsdowne) while
the issue was still in doubt. Gladden finished with a game-high 15
boards to go with 11 points.
Burke also had three assists and a
game-high-tying two steals. Teammate and freshman forward
J.T. Wilson (Sparta, N.J./Pope John XXIII
Regional) tied Burke with 11 points and
added four rebounds.
SU's senior guard Bryan Majors (Harrisburg,
Pa./Harrisburg) handed out a game-high five assists as
part of a three-point, five-rebound night. Junior guard
Jason Dawson (Somerset, N.J./Rutgers Prep) tied
Burke's two steals and added six points, five
rebounds and two assists in just 18 minutes.
Goucher's junior guard Micah Perry (Silver Spring,
Md./Springbrook) led all players with 14 points and added two
steals and a team-high-tying two assists.
Sophomore guard Shane Yambor (Burtonsville, Md./Paint Branch)
was the other Gopher to score in double figures, notching 10
points, four boards and two assists. Sophomore forward Steve
Musenga (Germantown, Md./Good Counsel) just missed a double-double
by picking up nine points and 10 boards off the bench. Senior guard
Pat Bailey (Rockville, Md./Magruder) contributed eight points, two
rebounds and two assists.
Susquehanna actually led by as many as nine points twice in the
first half before settling for a 32-31 lead at intermission.
