TOWSON, Md. -- Susquehanna University's senior guard
Ashley Watkins (La Habra Heights, Calif./Rosary)
came off the bench to score a team-high 12 points and grab four
rebounds in visiting Susquehanna's 55-50 Landmark Conference
women's basketball win over Goucher College at Decker Sports and
Recreation Center on Jan. 8.
Watkins also made a game-high-tying two steals
for SU (7-6, 1-1 Landmark), which scored the contest's final four
points to pull away.
Goucher (4-8, 0-2 Landmark) trailed, 51-46, with 4 minutes, 16
seconds left in the game before a Crusaders turnover and two missed
shots spurred the Gophers on a 4-0 run that cut the score to 51-50
with 1:52 to play.
Susquehanna scored next on a layup by sophomore guard/forward
Jessica Zigarelli (Warren, N.J./Watchung Hills
Regional), and after Goucher missed the front end of a
one-and-one free-throw chance, Zigarelli pounced
on the rebound.
SU came down the floor and fired a three-pointer that could have
put the game away, but the shot hit the iron.
Goucher pulled down the rebound and called a timeout with 25
seconds left, setting up a layup, but that shot also missed.
Watkins cleaned up the glass and was fouled,
sending her to the line, where she hit both ends of a one-and-one
to ice it.
The Gophers tried another three-ball with 14 seconds remaining,
but that shot was off as well.
SU's senior forward Samantha Jansson (Cumbola,
Pa./Nativity B.V.M.) contributed 10 points and a
team-high-tying six boards. Zigarelli tied
Jansson with six rebounds and
Watkins with two steals as part of a five-point
night.
Teammate and junior guard Erika Barron (Tamaqua,
Pa./Tamaqua Area) scored seven points on the strength of a
game-high two three-pointers (on three attempts) and dished out a
game-high three assists. Junior forward/center Samantha
Cartwright (Cranford, N.J./Cranford) played a game-high 34
minutes, fighting for six points and five rebounds.
Goucher's sophomore guard/forward Elizabeth von Ende [Leawood,
Kan./American Hebrew Academy (N.C.)] led all players with 15 points
and added two boards. Teammate and sophomore forward Allie Russo
(Bethesda, Md./Bethesda-Chevy Chase) scored 10 points and added a
game-high eight rebounds.
Senior forward Amber Smith (Baltimore, Md./Institute of Notre
Dame) scored 10 points, grabbed six boards and tied sophomore guard
Kelsey Myette (Binghamton, N.Y./Seton Catholic Central) for the
team-high with two assists. Myette also had five points and two
boards.
Offensive rebounding may have been the difference-maker, as the
Crusaders scored 12 second-chance points to the Gophers' four.
The Crusaders actually did not gain their first lead until 3:05
was left in the first half, though they never trailed again.
Goucher forced four ties in the second half.
Next Game: Saturday, Jan. 9, at Catholic (Landmark
Conference game), 2 p.m.
