WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Susquehanna University's junior forward
Hunter McKain (Ligonier, Pa./Shady Side Academy)
came off the bench to score a team-high 19 points and add five
rebounds to lead visiting Susquehanna past The Catholic University
of America, 76-67, in a Landmark Conference men's basketball game
at Raymond A. DuFour Center on Jan. 9.
The story of the game though may have been SU's sophomore guard
Spenser Spencer (Seattle, Wash./Lakeside), who
came off the bench to score 17 points in the last 14 minutes by
making 13 of 15 shots, including a 2-for-3 performance from
three-point range and a 7-for-7 job at the free-throw line.
The Crusaders (8-6, 1-2 Landmark) trailed, 40-38, when
Spencer entered the game. Susquehanna eventually
took the lead, 42-40, with 12 minutes, 44 seconds left after a
Spencer three-pointer and never trailed nor were
tied again.
In fact, Catholic (9-4, 2-1 Landmark) trailed by as many as 11
points four times after that and by 12 with nine seconds left after
Spencer grabbed a rebound and hit a pair of free
throws. He finished with two rebounds for the game.
Teammate and freshman forward J.T. Wilson (Sparta,
N.J./Pope John XXIII Regional) led all players with eight
rebounds and added five points. SU's senior guard Bryan
Majors (Harrisburg, Pa./Harrisburg) handed out a team-high
three assists and made a game-high-tying two steals as part of an
eight-point day. Freshman forward Daryl Augustus
(Baltimore, Md./Calvert Hall College HS) scored two points
and also made two steals.
The Cardinals' junior forward Jason Banzhaf (Livingston,
N.J./Seton Hall Prep) led all players with 20 points on 6-for-7
shooting from the field and grabbed a team-high six rebounds.
Teammate and freshman guard Shawn Holmes (Pikesville, Md./Calvert
Hall College HS) came off the bench to score 12 points, dish out a
game-high four assists and make a pair of steals. Like
Spencer, both Holmes and Banzhaf sunk two of three
three-pointers.
SU trailed, 37-31, at halftime.
The Crusaders scored 26 points off of turnovers to 15 for the
Cardinals.
