WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Susquehanna University's junior guard
Rachael Hughes (Gordon, Pa./North Schuylkill)
registered team-highs of 15 points and three steals, but visiting
Susquehanna fell to The Catholic University of America, 55-45, in a
Landmark Conference women's basketball game at Raymond A. DuFour
Center on Jan. 9.
Hughes also pulled down four rebounds against
Catholic (10-3, 3-0 Landmark), as SU (7-7, 1-2 Landmark) held a
44-41 advantage on the boards.
Still, Susquehanna made just 25.4 percent of its field goals,
including a 3-for-20 performance from three-point range. The
Cardinals made 36.5 percent of their shots from the field.
The Crusaders led by as many as four points in the first half
and last led at 13-12 with 7 minutes, 47 seconds left until
halftime.
A three-pointer from Catholic's freshman guard Jill Woerner
(Providence, R.I./St. Mary Academy-Bayview) made the score 15-13,
and the Cardinals never trailed nor were tied again. The score was
28-26 at intermission.
The 10-point margin of victory was the game's largest lead.
Hughes was the lone Crusader to score in double
figures. Sophomore guard/forward Jessica Zigarelli (Warren,
N.J./Watchung Hills Regional) led SU with nine rebounds
and added eight points, two steals and a game-high-tying two
assists. Teammate and junior guard Erika Barron (Tamaqua,
Pa./Tamaqua Area) also registered eight points, two steals
and two assists and pulled down five rebounds. Junior
forward/center Samantha Cartwright (Cranford,
N.J./Cranford) had two assists as well as part of a
four-point, five-rebound effort.
Woerner finished with 16 points to tie fellow freshman guard
Jenny McGann (York, Pa./York Catholic) for the game-high. Woerner
picked up a game-high 10 rebounds to form a double-double. She also
made three steals and blocked a game-high four shots. McGann
finished with six boards and a game-high four steals. Catholic's
junior guard Brianna Peterson (Garnerville, N.Y./North Rockland)
tallied 13 points and four rebounds.
