WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. – After playing a scoreless first half
against Penn College, the Susquehanna women's soccer team
decided it had had enough and erupted for eight second-half goals
to take an 8-0 decision from the Wildcats on Wednesday night.
The Crusaders (5-8-1) saw five different players net goals, led
by Marissa DeParto's three-goal effort.
Laura Buriak added two of her own, while
Megan Stevens, Anna Weisel and
Brianna Soars rounded-out the scoring for SU.
Soars and Weisel also chipped in assists for the Crusaders, two of
five players to do so.
All three goalies on the Susquehanna roster saw playing time.
Starter Rachel Norbuts played 55 of the 90 minutes
and thanks to a solid defensive effort from her teammates, was
forced into action only once all night. Sara
Guthrie and Hillary Martin saw 18 and 17
minutes of action, respectively.
The Crusaders also held a more-than impressive 44-3 edge in
total shots, 24 of which were on goal, as Penn College goalie
Hannah Britton finished the match with 16 saves.
Despite taking 22 shots in the first half, SU failed to find the
back of the net and went into halftime with the score knotted at
0-0.
That all changed just 55 seconds into the second period when
DeParto got the scoring starting thanks in part to a Julie Briskey
assist.
Twelve seconds later, Stevens scored an unassisted goal to
quickly make it a 2-0 game. DeParto then netted back-to-back goals
in a one-minute span, upping the lead to 4-0.
Nearly 20 minutes elapsed before Weisel, Buriak and Soars
combined for four goals over three minutes to make it 8-0, which
remained the final score.
DeParto now leads the team with five oals and two assists for 12
points.
