KINGS POINT, N.Y. – An early goal given up by the
Susquehanna men's soccer team proved to be the difference in
SU's 1-0 loss to conference opponent U.S. Merchant Marine
Academy on Saturday afternoon in Kings Point.
The Mariners (8-1-4, 3-0-2) got lucky against the normally
sure-handed SU goalie B.J. Merriam (Voorhees, N.J./Eastern
Regional) in the 13th minute and the Crusaders
(8-5-0, 3-1-0) were dealt their first Landmark conference loss of
the season.
Susquehanna's offensive attack was evenly spread out, with
nine different players combining for the team's 10 shots in
the game.
Merriam had a busy day in the net, making six saves in 90
minutes, four of which came in the second half to help give his
team a chance to come from behind.
Unfortunately, the Crusaders were unable to do so. The
Mariners' Michael Dunn scored what proved to be the game
winner with 12:09 on the clock when his shot went off
Merriam's hands and into the net for a 1-0 lead.
The Crusaders kept attacking until the final whistle blew,
however. Susquehanna fired off four shots in the final five minutes
of action, including a shot by Daniel Sosa (Columbia,
Pa./York Catholic) with five seconds on the clock that was
stopped by USMMA goalie Gary Poulin to end the game.
