SELINSGROVE, Pa. – The Susquehanna women's
volleyball team may offer to host every Landmark Round-Robin
Tournament if it can continue to replicate Saturday's
performances. The Crusaders went a perfect 2-0 on the opening day
of the tournament with wins over Moravian and Scranton.
SU (14-7, 2-0) notched its third win in a row and sixth in its
last seven matches with a 3-1 win over Moravian and a 3-0 blanking
of Scranton. The Crusaders won 25-23, 19-25, 24-26, 25-22 over the
Grayhounds and 25-10, 28-26, 25-20 against the Royals.
Sophomore libero Kelly O'Brien (Mastic,
N.Y./Eastport-South Manor) also made history on Saturday
less than two full years into her collegiate career. With 27
combined digs on Saturday, O'Brien moved into second all-time
in SU history with 1,348, surpassing Cheryl Smith (2002-05) who
finished her career with 1,334 digs.
Emily Carson (Caldwell, N.J./James Caldwell)
combined for 22 kills, 11 in each match, and also added a
double-double against Moravian with 21 digs. Senior Lindsey
Jankiewicz (Easton, Pa./Freedom) combined for 22 kills
with 14 coming in the win over Moravian.
Shona St. Angelo (Manorville, N.Y./Eastport-South
Manor) had another solid all-around performance for the
Crusaders with 41 assists against the Mules and 30 more in the
sweep of the Royals. She also added a combined 16 digs.
Kaylee Monga (Rockaway, N.J./Morris Knolls)
added a match-high eight block assists against Moravian and
contributed four more against Scranton. SU totaled 27 blocks
assists against the Mules with Jankiewicz adding six and Carson
finishing with five.
The round-robin tournament wraps-up tomorrow with five matches
on the schedule. SU opens the day at 10 a.m. against Catholic and
then faces a 17-1 Juniata squad at 3 p.m. in the final match of the
weekend.
