HUNTINGDON, Pa. – A flurry of second-half goals helped the
Susquehanna women's soccer team force overtime against
Juniata, but an Eagles' overtime score handed SU the road
loss on Wednesday afternoon.
After playing a scoreless first half, the squads erupted for two
goals apiece in the second half, including a Juniata score with two
minutes remaining, to send the game into overtime. Midway through
that first overtime period, the Eagles (9-6-0, 3-2-0) scored to
hand SU (5-9-1, 1-3-0) the loss.
The game was played as evenly as the final score indicated. The
Crusaders took 15 shots to Juniata's 14 and both goalies
finished with five saves in their near 98 minutes of action. SU
goalie Rachel Norbuts (Monroeville,
N.J./Woodstown) made for of her five saves in the opening
half to play a key role in keeping her squad in the game.
Coming out of halftime, Angela Amato (Baltimore,
Md./Notre Dame Prep) got Susquehanna on the board with a
goal six minutes into the period, thanks in part to a
Samantha Price (Minersville, Pa./Minersville Area)
assist.
The Eagles responded four minutes later with their first score
to knot it at one-all.
For the next 30 minutes, it stood tied at 1-1 before senior
Alison Chavers (Freehold, N.J./Ranney) broke that
tie with an unassisted goal in the 85th minute on the
clock.
As time wound down in regulation, it seemed SU would hang on for
the win but a late goal by the Eagles' Alicia Snyder made it
a tie game.
Erin Eddinger became the third Juniata player to score when she
netted the game winner less than eight minutes into overtime.
