SELINSGROVE, Pa. – The Susquehanna women's
volleyball team grabbed three wins in its four matches during the
first weekend of conference action. SU hosted the first Landmark
Conference Round-Robin Tournament of the fall and won its opening
three matches before falling to No. 2 Juniata on Sunday.
Following two wins on Saturday, the Crusaders (15-8, 3-1) opened
Sunday with a 3-1 win over Catholic before falling to
nationally-ranked Juniata 3-0 in the weekend finale.
SU defeated Catholic 21-25, 25-18, 25-14, 25-19. Juniata,
meanwhile, took 25-18, 25-22, 25-12 decisions from Susquehanna.
Senior Lindsey Jankiewicz (Easton, Pa./Freedom)
had eight kills in each match, giving her 1,609 for her career. She
now needs just three more kills to tie Kerri Eshleman (2001-04) for
first all-time in program history.
In addition, head coach Kuuipo Tom's three wins
over the weekend put him just two victories shy of tying for the
most wins by a head coach in program history. He currently has 151
victories and is the fastest coach to reach that win total in
program history.
Against Catholic, Emily Carson (Caldwell, N.J./James
Caldwell) led SU with 15 kills to go along with 10 digs,
four block assists and five assists for a solid, all-around effort.
Shona St. Angelo (Manorville, N.Y./Eastport-South
Manor) led the squad with 41 assists and chipped in 12
digs, as well.
Defensively, Emily Bwint (Collegeville, Pa./Perkiomen
Valley) tallied 14 digs while also contributing two
service aces and six kills. Kelly O'Brien (Mastic,
N.Y./Eastport-South Manor), currently second all-time in
digs, had 14.
SU started out strong against Juniata, falling by just seven
points in the first set. The Crusaders then held a lead for much of
the second set before Juniata rallied to win 25-22. Susquehanna
struggled to gain momentum in the third and decisive set, falling
25-12.
Against the Eagles, Kaylee Monga (Rockaway, N.J./Morris
Knolls) tied Jankiewicz for the team lead in kills with
eight. O'Brien added 12 additional digs, bringing her total
on the day to 26, and St. Angelo again led the team in assists with
24.
Next match: Susquehanna hosts its fifth-annual Hampton Inn
Crusader Classic on Friday and Saturday, Oct. 8-9.
