SELINSGROVE, Pa. – The Susquehanna University men's
soccer team topped the visitors from Drew University, 1-0, on
Senior Day and clinched the top overall seed in the 2010 Landmark
Conference championships on Oct. 30.
SU's (11-6-0, 6-1-0) junior Joey Stellato (Convent
Station, N.J./Morristown) netted the gamewinning goal in
the 11th minute of action when he capitalized on senior Jim
Robertiello's (Chester, N.J./West Morris
Mendham) centering pass that was kicked out of mid air
past the Drew (12-2-3, 5-1-1) goalkeeper.
The Rangers had two opportunities to tie the game just two minutes
later, but their first shot was saved by senior B.J.
Merriam (Voorhees, N.J./Eastern Regional) and the second
was blocked. The two shots came four seconds apart.
Merriam made four saves in all 90 minutes of
action to pick up his 11th victory and seventh shutout of the
season.
SU tried to add another goal in the first four minutes of the
second half, but the first shot was saved and led to a corner kick.
The header attempt on that corner sailed just wide left of the goal
which extinguished the threat.
Drew's final chance to deadlock the game came by way of a
red card on the Crusaders. Forced to play a man-down the final
eight minutes of play, SU went with an extra defender to stall the
Rangers offensive attack. The strategy worked out for the Crusaders
and walked away with the victory.
SU will host The Catholic University of America on Wednesday, Nov.
3, in the semi-final round of the Landmark Conference championships
at a time still to be announced.
Next game: Wednesday, Nov. 3, vs. Catholic (Landmark
championships), TBA
