Box Score
SELINSGROVE, Pa. – The Susquehanna men's soccer team
did not struggle for shots or goals in a 4-1 win over Landmark
Conference opponent Goucher on Saturday afternoon. The Crusaders
put on a three-goal, first-half performance and never allowed the
Gophers back in the game.
Freshman Dean Hristopoulos came off the bench
to lead Susquehanna (8-3-0, 3-0-0) with two goals and help keep his
team undefeated in league play and extend its win streak to four
straight. Daniel Sosa and Adam
Matteo netted the other two goals for the Crusaders, who
out-shot Goucher (4-9-0, 0-3-0) by a 30-5 mark. For Hristopoulous
and Sosa, a sophomore, it marked the first goals of their
collegiate careers.
SU's defense also kept the Gophers off the scoreboard for
more than 75 minutes and allowed Goucher to register only one
first-half shot. Goalie B.J. Merriam was forced
into action just once all afternoon and Pat Horan
played the final 7:28 in goal for Susquehanna.
While Susquehanna had numerous chances to get on the board in
the action, it took more than 31 minutes for the Crusaders to turn
one of their scoring chances into a goal. Matteo netted what stood
as the game winner with a direct shot into the upper half of the
net with 31:13 on the clock.
That sparked the offense as just eight minutes later,
Hristopolous scored the first of his back-to-back goals thanks to
an assist from Sosa that made it a 2-0 ballgame.
Not even three minutes elapsed before the Crusaders put Goucher
in a 3-0 hole when John Boylan's pass found Hristopolous and
the rookie buried his second goal in a three-minute span for a 3-0
SU advantage, which remained the score at the midway point.
The Gophers' Andrew Bull broke-up Susquehanna's
shutout with 15 minutes remaining, but Sosa added an unassisted
insurance goal with roughly three minutes left to cap off the
scoring and hand SU the 4-1 victory.
In total, nine different Susquehanna players took multiple shots
in the match, led by senior co-captain Jim
Robertiello's six. Of the Crusaders' 30 shots,
13 were on goal and SU held a 16-0 edge in corner kicks.
