SELINSGROVE, Pa. – Two second-half goals scored by the
Susquehanna women's soccer team provided enough offense for
the Crusaders to win 2-0 over Goucher on Saturday afternoon.
After playing a scoreless opening half, SU (4-7-1, 1-2-0) netted
two goals in a two-minute span early in the second half to come
away with the shutout over the Gophers (2-7-2, 0-3-0). The win was
the Crusaders' first conference victory of the fall.
Susquehanna held the clear offensive advantage for the entire 90
minutes, taking 17 shots to Goucher's six. Julie
Briskey and Kelly Bassett provided the
scoring for SU while goalie Rachel Norbuts
finished the afternoon with four saves, three of which came in the
second half.
With 10 shots in the first half, none translated into scores for
the Crusaders. Chayna Schiff nearly broke trend
late in the first half. She had a fastbreak to the goal, but her
ensuing shot was smothered by Goucher goalie Kellen Matthews and it
remained 0-0 at the midway point.
Briskey took matters into her own hands 11 minutes into the
second half. She found herself wide open 30 yards out from the goal
and fired a hard shot that went past Matthews into the left side of
the net for the 1-0 score.
Less than two minutes later, SU made it a 2-0 game, even though
the team's celebration was a bit delayed. Marissa
DeParto had a shot saved by a diving stop from Matthews
and while it appeared Matthews had a hand on it, it somehow escaped
her grasp and Bassett knocked the ball past Matthews, who was still
on the ground.
From there, Susquehanna's defense ensured the 2-0 lead
stood up as Goucher managed only four shots in the final half.
The shutout was SU's second of the season and first since
a Sept. 5 1-0 win against Stevenson.
Susquehanna also held its annual Breast Cancer Awareness Day.
The team wore pink uniforms and donations were collected throughout
the afternoon. In addition, shirts and wristbands were sold, with
all proceeds going directly to the American Cancer Society's
fight against breast cancer.
