Box Score
SELINSGROVE, Pa. – Sunday's Susquehanna
women's basketball game against King's College featured
12 lead changes and saw the score knotted on six separate
occasions, and unfortunately it was the Monarchs who pulled away
late to win the 2010 Pepsi/Weis Tip-Off Tournament title with an
88-79 win.
Despite the loss, SU history was made as senior Erika
Barron (Tamaqua, Pa./Tamaqua Area) became the
program's all-time three-point shooter. She went 6-for-10
from beyond the arc to bring her career total to 115 treys,
surpassing the previous mark of 111, held by Amy Harrington
'02.
Barron, who earned All-Tournament Team honors, finished the game
with 22 points, 18 of which came from three-point range, and a
game-high seven assists.
Sophomore Gina Palazzi (Newfoundland, Pa./Wallenpaupack
Area) had a career afternoon for Susquehanna (1-2) as she
poured in 29 points on a 10-of-18 shooting performance and pulled
down a game-high 15 rebounds, nearly half of which came on the
offensive end of the court.
Also reaching double figures was senior captain Rachael
Hughes (Gordon, Pa./North Schuylkill), who added 18 to go
along with six rebounds, two blocks and two steals.
The game started out in favor of King's as the team opened
up a 10-4 lead over Susquehanna after less than four minutes of
action.
The Crusaders saw their first lead of the afternoon four minutes
later when Hughes made it 13-12 on a jumper at the 12:02 mark.
The lead proceeded to change hands for the remainder of half,
with neither squad taking more than a seven-point advantage at any
time. Susquehanna went ahead four with 16 seconds left thanks to a
Palazzi jumper and took a 40-36 into halftime.
SU held on to its lead until a King's three from Lindsay
Atchcison with 14:52 on the clock tied it at 50-all. The Crusaders
regained a four-point lead (62-58) midway through the half on one
of Barron's six threes.
Both teams continued battling back and forth until the Monarchs
took what would be a permanent lead with 6:06 on the clock on a
Carissa Gegaris three.
Three minutes later the Crusaders still remained within one of
the lead (76-75), but King's out-scored SU 12-4 over the
final 3:07 with six of those points coming from the charity
stripe.
In the consolation game, the University of Pittsburgh-Bradford
defeated Keystone College 65-44.
King's men's and women's team both won the
tournament titles as the men defeated Susquehanna 67-61 on Saturday
afternoon.
