Field Hockey Falls in Semifinals

Box Score

SELINSGROVE, Pa. – The Susquehanna field hockey was ready to defend its home turf on Wednesday afternoon but a dominant offensive performance by Catholic University led to a 6-0 SU loss in the semifinal round of the Landmark Conference Tournament.

The Crusaders (12-7) fell into an early hole against the Cardinals (14-3) and were unable to dig their way out of it. SU finished the season with 12 victories, the most during Cohen's five-year tenure.

Goalies Margaret Ruth (Lewisberry, Pa./Northern) and Erin Ferguson (Mount Laurel, N.J./Seneca) split time in goal. Ruth gave up three goals in her 42 minutes of action while Ferguson surrendered the other three.

Catholic held a dominant 24-3 edge in shots and goalie Krystyanna Ramsdell was the benefactor of her team's solid defensive effort, making only one save in her 70 minutes of action.

Catholic quickly gained momentum when the Cardinals' Tracey Scanlon converted on a Meredith Chandler penalty corner less than eight minutes into the action.

The Cardinals struck again with 17:25 on the clock. This time it was Scanlon who picked up the assist after her pass found Mary Swarthout near the right corner of the SU cage. Swarthout knocked it to Ruth's right side and past the freshman goalie for a 2-0 game.

Susquehanna found itself down 3-0 after Catholic converted on yet another corner opportunity, as this time Tory Gagliardi fed the ball to Elizabeth Grumbein who fired a hard shot past Ruth.

That prompted head coach Amy Cohen to make a goalie change, bringing in Ferguson with 5:51 left in the opening half.

It remained 3-0 coming out of halftime, but Catholic added to its lead after less than five minutes of action in the final period, putting SU in a 4-0 hole and only 30 minutes with which to work.

The fifth and sixth Cardinals goals effectively put the game out of reach for Susquehanna.
