ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. – The Susquehanna men's
basketball team swapped leads with Elizabethtown all night, but
ultimately could not put the Blue Jays away, falling 92-87 on
Saturday night in Elizabethtown.
The loss certainly was not for a lack of scoring for either
team, as five SU players reached double figures, led by
Spenser Spencer (Seattle, Wash./Lakeside) and
Rob Estep (York, Pa./West York/Hobart), who poured
in 20 points apiece. Rookie Harley Sellinger (Mill Hall,
Pa./Central Mountain) added 12, while J.T. Wilson
(Sparta, N.J./Pope John XXIII Regional) and Harvey
Pannell (Bloomfield, Conn./St. Thomas More) each scored 10
points.
Estep and Pannell fell only two rebounds shy of a double-double
as both tied for the team lead with eight boards. Pannell was also
generous with the ball, dishing out a team-high five assists.
Free throws proved troublesome for SU (3-6), however, as the
Crusaders sank just 63 percent of its attempts. The Blue Jays were
also able to shoot at a 47 percent clip from the floor
(33-of-70).
SU jumped out to the early 3-0 lead on an E.J. Duncan
(East Stroudsburg, Pa./Pope John XIII Regional)
three-point play before Elizabethtown grabbed its first lead of the
night, 12-11, on a Joe Flanagan three with 15:53 on the clock.
The Blue Jays (7-1) went up by four, 17-13, less than two
minutes later before a 7-0 Crusaders run put them back in the lead
at 18-17.
Both teams saw shares of the lead as the half reached the midway
point. Trailing 28-24 with less than eight minutes to play,
Susquehanna put up nine unanswered points to grab a seven-point
lead (35-28) with 6:35 on the clock.
Two Estep free throws in the final 90 seconds helped keep SU
narrowly in the lead at halftime, 43-42.
The Blue Jays came out of halftime and quickly erased
Susquehanna's lead thanks to back-to-back buckets by Keith
Fogel, who scored a game-high 21 points. Elizabethtown maintained a
50-44 lead less than two minutes into the half and the Crusaders
found themselves down 60-53 before Estep drained a three at the
13:23 mark to make it 60-55.
That trey sparked a 12-0 Susquehanna run that vaulted them back
into the lead at 64-60 with 11:23 still to play. Sellinger came
through with two straight layups to keep SU ahead 73-68 with
roughly seven minutes left.
The Crusaders still held the advantage, 82-79, with 4:22 to play
thanks to a Spenser jumper, but Elizabethtown put together an 8-0
stretch that put the Blue Jays back in the lead, 87-82 with three
minutes remaining.
With just 90 seconds to play, Bryan Harrity made it a five-point
Elizabethtown advantage (89-84) but Susquehanna still had time to
challenge that lead.
Wilson converted on a three-point play that brought the lead
back down to two, 89-87, but Elizabethtown scored the final three
points of the game to seal the 92-87 win.
