DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – The Susquehanna women's
basketball ended 2010 on a high note in the form of a 65-52 win
over Berry College on Thursday afternoon at the Land of Magic
Classic. Gina Palazzi (Newfoundland,
Pa./Wallenpaupack) led SU with a double-double to help the
Crusaders even their season record.
Palazzi helped lead Susquehanna (6-6) to the victory with her
20-point, 11-rebound performance, her fifth double-double of the
season and second in a row. The Crusaders held a 47-42 edge over
Berry (4-7) in rebounds and forced 19 Vikings turnovers, which
translated into 21 SU points.
It was Berry that scored first to take a 2-0 lead but that was
the last time the Vikings led. Senior Rachael Hughes
(Gordon, Pa./North Schuylkill) tied it at two with a
jumper and two Samantha Pelletier (Harwinton, Conn./Lewis
S. Mills) free throws gave SU a 4-2 lead, one the
Crusaders would not relinquish.
Rachel Schaible's (Blue Bell,
Pa./Wissahickon) jumper midway through the opening half
handed Susquehanna its first double-digit lead of the game, 15-4,
as Berry went four-and-a-half minutes without a point.
At the four-minute mark, SU held a 30-13 lead thanks to a
Palazzi layup. Freshman Candence Cannady's (Chicago,
Ill./Whitney M. Young Magnet) jumper two minutes later
made it a 20-point game (34-14) and the Crusaders took an eventual
16-point lead (36-20) into the locker room at halftime.
Coming out of halftime, SU picked up right where it left off and
quickly upped its lead to a game-high 26 points (51-25) less than
five minutes into the half thanks to another Palazzi layup.
That 26-point cushion was needed, however, as the Vikings cut
Susquehanna's lead in half (59-46) with 3:42 still to play.
The Crusaders led by 11, 61-50, with 1:20 on the clock and gave up
only two more points to hold on for the 13-point (65-52) margin of
victory.
