SELINSGROVE, Pa. – A pair of Susquehanna women's
basketball seniors were key factors in leading SU to a 74-73
overtime win against Juniata on Saturday night. Rachael
Hughes provided the game-tying score to force overtime and
classmate Samantha Cartwright's jumper with
41 seconds left in OT proved to be the game winner.
Following on the heel's of the SU men's OT win
against the Eagles, Susquehanna's women (3-3, 1-0) overcame a
four-point halftime deficit to grab the win over Juniata (5-2,
0-1). Senior Erika Barron led all scorers with 21
points while Gina Palazzi recorded a double-double
with 17 points and 17 rebounds, 10 of which came on the offensive
end. Hughes finished with 15 points and added three assists in her
43 minutes of action.
The Crusaders grabbed 50 boards to Juniata's 45 and shot
at a near 37 percent clip from three-point range, with Barron
leading the way with five treys.
Juniata at one point held a 10-point lead, 30-20, with 5:35
remaining in the first half. By the time that half came to a close,
however, SU had cut that lead to four as the Eagles scored only two
points over the final three minutes.
Juniata remained ahead until Palazzi's jumper at the 7:52
marked put SU in the lead, 56-54, and from there the lead changed
hands for the remainder of the half.
Trailing 70-68 with 25 seconds left, Hughes came through the
jumper to tie it at 70 and send the game into overtime.
SU trailed for the entire overtime period until, with 41 seconds
on the clock and the Crusaders down 73-72, Cartwright came through
with the clutch jumper and the Eagles were unable to get another
shot off, sealing the win for Susquehanna.
