DALLAS, Pa. – Two Harvey Pannell (Bloomfield,
Conn./St. Thomas More) layups in the final three minutes
of the Susquehanna men's basketball game against Misericordia
helped seal a 76-74 win over the Cougars and give SU its second
straight victory.
Pannell led the Crusaders (3-5) with 20 points while
Spenser Spencer (Seattle, Wash./Lakeside) added
12, including a free throw in the final seconds of the game that
helped put Misericordia away. Rob Estep (York, Pa./West
York/Hobart) chipped in 16 points that included a
four-for-four performance from the free throw line. E.J.
Duncan (East Stroudsburg, Pa./Pope John XIII Regional) led
all players with six assists to go along with seven points and four
rebounds.
Rookie center Harley Sellinger (Mill Hall, Pa./Central
Mountain) had a game-high 10 rebounds while chipping in
six points. Overall, Susquehanna dominated on the boards, pulling
down 43 to the Cougars' 25. The SU bench also out-performed
Misericordia's bench players by a 20-11 margin while dealing
Misericordia (5-2) just its second loss of the season.
The Crusaders jumped out to the early 5-2 lead and remained
ahead 11-5 on back-to-back Estep buckets less than three minutes
into the game.
Misericordia came back to tie the game at 11 and went ahead
12-11 on three straight free throws. Both teams saw shares of the
lead as the game neared the midway point of the opening half.
Trailing 27-21 with 10 minutes to play in the opening period,
the Crusaders ended the half by scoring 21 points while its defense
held Misericordia to just five, and took a 42-32 lead at halftime,
a lead they would not relinquish.
Susquehanna came out of halftime and quickly took a game-high
12-point advantage (48-35) on a Sellinger field goal. J.T.
Wilson (Sparta, N.J./Pope John XXIII Regional) converted
on a three-point play with 15 minutes to play to help SU maintain
the 12-point lead at 54-42.
With seven minutes on the clock, a Spencer trey made the score
69-57 but the Cougars were not ready to hand the win over to SU so
easily. They went on an 11-2 run that spanned more than three
minutes and cut what had been a double-digit Crusaders lead to just
three (71-68).
With 1:15 left in regulation, Misericordia's Robbie
Johnson, who led all scorers with 25 points, came through with
back-to-back baskets that made it a one-point game (73-72).
Teammate Sean Bieski added a free throw with 41 seconds on the
clock to keep his team within one (75-74), but Spencer converted a
free throw of his own with no time remaining to prevent
Misericordia from succeeding in its comeback attempt.
