SCRANTON, Pa. -- Susquehanna University's sophomore
guard/forward Jessica Zigarelli (Warren, N.J./Watchung
Hills Regional) tallied her third double-double of the
season with 17 points and 10 rebounds, but visiting Susquehanna
fell to nationally ranked No. 16 The University of Scranton, 67-48,
in a Landmark Conference women's basketball game at John Long
Center on Feb. 12.
Zigarelli led SU with three assists and three
blocked shots and also made a game-high seven field goals (on 16
attempts).
The Crusaders (13-10, 7-5 Landmark) only led Scranton (19-3,
10-1 Landmark) once in the game at 4-2 with 18 minutes, 36 seconds
remaining in the first half. SU was able to tie the score five
times in the first period but could never take the lead.
After the final deadlock at 13 with 13:51 left before intermission,
Scranton used an 11-0 run over a 3:28 span to go into the break
with a 40-27 advantage.
SU's junior guard Erika Barron (Tamaqua, Pa./Tamaqua
Area) made a team-high two steals and chipped in six
points and four boards. Teammate and freshman forward Gina
Palazzi (Newfoundland, Pa./Wallenpaupack) grabbed a
game-high 11 rebounds, while senior forward Samantha
Jansson (Cumbola, Pa./Nativity B.V.M.) and sophomore guard
Korey McCaffrey (Millheim, Pa./Penns Valley Area)
each notched six points.
The Crusaders started the second half on an 8-2 run to cut the
score to 42-37 with 15:55 left, but Scranton outscored SU, 25-11,
for the rest of the game.
Scranton's junior guard Megan Kopecki (Millington, N.J./Watchung
Hills Regional) led the Lady Royals with 18 points, seven
rebounds, four assists and four steals. Teammate and junior guard
Jennifer King (Taylor, Pa./Riverside) posted a team-high two
blocked shots and added nine points. Senior guard Ryan Mooney
(Spring City, Pa./Pius X) chipped in 14 points.
Scranton forced SU into 21 turnovers and held the Crusaders
to just 29.6-percent shooting from the floor (16-for-54).
