Men's Hoops Wins at Moravian, 69-55

Boxscore

BETHLEHEM, Pa. -- Susquehanna University's freshman guard/forward Harvey Pannell (Bloomfield, Conn./St. Thomas More) scored a game-high 22 points and grabbed a team-high seven rebounds to lead Susquehanna to a 69-55 Landmark Conference men's basketball win over host Moravian College at Archibald Johnston Hall on Feb. 13.

SU (14-10, 7-6 Landmark) surrendered the first five points of the game but scored the next six to take its first lead. Moravian (6-16, 2-9 Landmark) scored next for a 7-6 advantage, but the Crusaders went on a 17-2 run after that to lead, 23-9, with 7 minutes, 29 seconds left in the first half.

The Greyhounds fought back enough to trail just 33-23 at the break, but an end-to-end Susquehanna offense saw the visitors eventually build a 20-point lead twice in the second period.

After the second 20-point lead, Moravian managed to get the score to 60-51 with 3:27 remaining, but it was too little too late.

The Crusaders were lights-out from the free-throw line, making their first 16 charity attempts and finishing 20-for-23.

Pannell finished with three steals in this game. He made a game-high 10 field goals (on 16 tries). Junior guard Rob Estep (York, Pa./West York) was the other Crusader scoring in double figures with 14 points. Estep made all five of his free throws and added two boards. His three-pointer with 2:49 to play gave SU its final double-digit lead.

Teammate and senior forward Marcus Burke (Hyde Park, Mass./Brimmer and May) finished with six points-all in the second half-before fouling out. Burke also had five rebounds, three steals, a game-high-tying three assists and a team-high-tying two blocked shots.

Junior forward Hunter McKain (Ligonier, Pa./Shady Side Academy) blocked two shots as well as part of a four-point, three-rebound effort. SU's senior guard Bryan Majors (Harrisburg, Pa./Harrisburg) made a game-high two three-pointers (on two attempts) and finished with eight points, two assists and a game-high five steals.

Like Burke, Majors scored all of his points in the second half.

Moravian's junior center Chris Cullen (East Islip, N.Y./East Islip) registered a double-double with 13 points and a game-high 11 rebounds. Cullen also handed out three assists. Freshman center Blake English (Sussex, N.J./Vernon Twp.) led the Greyhounds with 15 points and four blocked shots and added four rebounds.

Teammate and sophomore guard Shane Painter (Bedminster, N.J./Bernards) notched 10 points and five boards, while senior forward Eric Weaver (Succasunna, N.J./Roxbury) made a team-high three steals to go with seven points and six boards.

SU's 24 points off of turnovers to just eight for the Greyhounds may have been the difference. Sixteen of Moravian's 25 turnovers were the result of steals.

Next Game: Saturday, Feb. 20, vs. Juniata (Landmark Conference game - Senior Night/SU Sports Hall of Fame Night), 7:30 p.m.
