BETHLEHEM, Pa. -- Susquehanna University's junior guard
Erika Barron (Tamaqua, Pa./Tamaqua Area)
registered a team-high 13 points and a game-high six assists, but
visiting Susquehanna fell to nationally ranked No. 11 Moravian
College, 72-61, in a Landmark Conference women's basketball game at
Archibald Johnston Hall on Feb. 13.
Barron made a game-high-tying five field goals
from the field (on nine attempts) and was 3-for-5 from three-point
range. She also made a team-high two steals.
SU (13-11, 7-6 Landmark) trailed Moravian (20-2, 11-0 Landmark),
8-4, over the first 3 minutes, 29 seconds of the game but used a
5-0 run to take its first lead at 9-8 with 15:21 to go in the half.
Moravian held a short one-point lead on a made layup before the
Crusaders scored six unanswered points to notch their biggest lead,
16-10, with 11:59 left.
The Crusaders went scoreless over the next 5:28, and Moravian
outscored them, 26-6, for the rest of the half.
SU's junior guard Rachel Hughes (Gordon, Pa./North
Schuylkill) tallied 12 points and handed out four assists.
Hughes also made five baskets, including a
three-pointer.
Crusaders freshman forward Gina Palazzi (Newfoundland,
Pa./Wallenpaupack) notched 10 points on 5-for-8 shooting
for the floor and grabbed a game-high eight rebounds, while
sophomore guard/forward Jessica Zigarelli (Warren,
N.J./Watchung Hills Regional) had a team-high two blocked
shots and seven boards.
The Greyhounds started off the second half with a 7-2 run to record
its biggest lead of the game, 43-24, just 2:06 into the period.
Susquehanna slowly chipped away at the deficit to bring the
score to 50-42 on a pass from Hughes and a made
jumper by junior forward Samantha Cartwright (Cranford,
N.J./Canford) with 12:32 to go.
Moravian built its lead back out to double-digits before the
Crusaders fought back again and brought the game to within four
points, 63-59, with 2:42 left. Back-to-back layups by the
Greyhounds increased the gap to eight points and put the game out
of reach with under a minute to play.
Moravian's difference-maker on the defensive end was sophomore
forward Alexandra Blair (Hellertown, Pa./Bethlehem Catholic), who
recorded a game-high seven blocked shots and a team-high-tying
seven rebounds (six defensive).
Teammate and senior guard Jessica Foran (Annandale, N.J./Rutgers
Prep) led all players with 15 points on 5-for-11 shooting from the
field and 5-for-6 from the free-throw line.
Senior forward Kirsty Stearns (East Norwich, N.Y./Oyster Bay)
chipped in 11 points and seven rebounds, while sophomore guard
Hilary Murray (Clinton, N.J./North Hunterdon) dished out a
team-high four assists. Stearns and Murray both made a game-high
three steals.
Moravian blocked 13 Susquehanna shots and forced 21 turnovers.
SU shot better from the field than the Greyhounds (42.6 percent to
39.7 percent), but Moravian made 13 more free throws.
