SELINSGROVE, Pa. -- The Susquehanna University softball team
dropped both ends of its home-opening doubleheader, 4-3, 4-1, to
non-conference opponent York College of Pennsylvania at Sassafras
Fields on March 16.
Susquehanna (7-3 overall) trailed York (13-1 overall), 2-1,
after the top of the fifth inning in Game 1. SU started the bottom
half of that inning with two quick outs on two pitches but strung
together five straight hits to regain the lead, 3-2. A triple by
York in the seventh inning tied the game and a safety squeeze
followed for the winning run.
Junior Cara Swerdlow (Bloomfield,
N.J./Bloomfield) pitched a complete Game 1 in the loss,
scattering eight hits with six strikeouts.
SU's sophomore outfielder Lisa Finizio (Oakland,
N.J./Indian Hills) led the way in the opener by going
2-for-4 with a run scored and a stolen base.
Teammate and senior outfielder Deanna Anderson (Coal
Twp.,Pa./Shamokin Area) also went 2-for-4 in that game
with a double, a run batted in and a run scored. Junior infielder
Kim Rubino (Parsippany, N.J./Parsippany) went
1-for-2 with a walk. Fellow junior infielder Shelly Landis
(Souderton, Pa./Chirstopher Dock Mennonite) and senior
catcher Kelli Holota (Spring Lake,
N.J./Livingston) both went 1-for-3 and drove in a run.
Crusaders freshman Sarah Hoffman (Laceyville,
Pa./Wyalusing Valley) started Game 2 and pitched another
complete-game loss, striking out one batter.
The Crusaders had six hits in the nightcap, led by a 2-for-3
performance from Landis. Rubino
went 1-for-3 with a walk in that game and drove in SU's only run.
Finizio batted 1-for-3 with a walk. Sophomore
outfielder Sarah Dowzicky (Collegeville, Pa./Germantown
Academy) doubled in three at bats.
