Crusaders Split at Gettysburg, 11-7, 4-10

GETTYSBURG, Pa. -- The Susquehanna University softball team split a non-conference doubleheader with host Gettysburg College, 11-7, 4-10, at Bobby Jones Field on March 18.

Susquehanna (8-4-0 overall) scored all of its runs in the last two innings to take Game 1 from Gettysburg (6-5-1 overall). The Bullets scored nine of their Game 2 runs in the second inning--all unearned.

Junior Cara Swerdlow (Bloomfield, N.J./Bloomfield) pitched her sixth straight complete game to earn the win in the opener. She allowed 11 hits and five walks while striking out a game-high eight batters.

Junior infielder Shelly Landis (Souderton, Pa./Christopher Dock Mennonite) and senior catcher Kelli Holota (Spring Lake, N.J./Livingston) both went 2-for-4 with three runs batted in and a run scored to lead the Crusaders in Game 1. Landis doubled twice, and Holota had one double on her way to picking up her 100th career hit. Teammate and junior infielder/pitcher Kim Rubino (Parsippany, N.J./Parsippany) went 2-for-4 with a run as well.

SU's junior infielder Brennan Balfour (Cape Elizabeth, Maine/Cape Elizabeth) and sophomore infielder Kate Reese (Wellsboro, Pa./Wellsboro Area) both went 1-for-3 with an RBI. Reese also walked, and Balfour scored.

Junior outfielder/pitcher Bryn Whitmire (Lederach, Pa./Souderton Area) and sophomore outfielder Sarah Dowzicky (Collegeville, Pa./Germantown Academy) both went 1-for-4 in the opener. Whitmire walked, stole a base and scored twice, and Dowzicky drove in two runs.

Junior infielder Taylor Crawford (Matamoras, Pa./Delaware Valley HS) was 0-for-3 but was hit by a pitch and scored. Teammate and sophomore outfielder Lisa Finizio (Oakland, N.J./Indian Hills) was 0-for-4 with a walk and two runs.

Freshman Sarah Hoffman (Laceyville, Pa./Wyalusing Valley) suffered the Game 2 loss despite throwing a complete game. Hoffman allowed just the one earned run on nine hits and five walks.

Finizio batted 3-for-4 in the nightcap with a double and two runs. Balfour was 1-for-3 with a triple and three RBI. Landis singled and walked in two at bats.

Dowzicky went 1-for-3 with an RBI in the second game. Reese was 1-for-4 and scored once.
