Elmira Pulls Away Late from SU for 16-13 Win

Boxscore

SELINSGROVE, Pa. -- Susquehanna University's junior midfielder Ryan Oakes (North Yarmouth, Maine/Cheverus) led all players with a career-high 14 ground balls, but Susquehanna lost a non-conference men's lacrosse game to visiting Elmira College, 16-13, at Sassafras Fields on March 24.

Oakes dominated in the faceoffs department, winning a game-high 21 of them (on 31 attempts). Susquehanna (5-3 overall) won 22 of 33 faceoffs as a team, but Elmira (3-2 overall) won some crucial draws late in the game, leading to an important string of goals.

SU also held the advantage in shots, 43-37; ground balls, 41-35; and clears, 21-for-26, compared to Elmira's 18-for-27, but the Soaring Eagles' goalkeeper made a game-high 12 saves, including three in the fourth quarter.

Sophomore Jordan Daney (Wynnewood, Pa./Lower Merion) suffered the loss in goal despite making 11 saves in 30 second-half minutes, including 10 in the third quarter alone. Daney relieved sophomore Anthony Maiorella (Mountain Lakes, N.J./Mountain Lakes), who made two saves in the first half while allowing the first seven Elmira goals.

Elmira opened the game with a 3-0 run, but the Crusaders scored the next four goals to take their first lead with 7 minutes, 28 seconds left in the second quarter.

Play truly went back-and-forth from there with neither team able to take control of the game. The score was tied at 7 at halftime and at 11 entering the fourth quarter.

Elmira pulled away from there, winning five of eight fourth-quarter faceoffs, including four in a row at one point, and scoring the first four goals of the final period.

Crusaders sophomore midfielder Billy Spack (Arlington, Va., Yorktown) led all players with five goals. Teammate and sophomore attack Tim Pastore (Ridgewood, N.J./Ridgewood) scored two goals and added two assists.

Sophomore midfielder Luke Delavan (Madison, N.J./Madison) and sophomore attack Dustin Breakey (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Cumberland Valley) also scored twice for SU. Delavan had an assist as well.

Oakes and freshman midfielder Marcus Cheatham (Reisterstown, Md./Loyola HS) both notched one goal. Cheatham also had eight ground balls.

Freshman attack Sean Ledwick (Weston, Conn./Weston) assisted on two Susquehanna scores, while junior midfielder Henry Weismantel (Chatham, N.J./Chatham HS) and freshman midfielder Tylere Fritts (Chatham, N.J./Chatham HS) both assisted on one.

Next Game: Saturday, March 27, vs. Goucher (Landmark Conference game – 10th Anniversary Celebration), 1 p.m.
