ORLANDO, Fla. -- The Susquehanna University softball team
started its 2010 season with a pair of non-conference neutral-site
wins at Disney's Wide World of Sports on March 7.
Susquehanna (2-0 overall) defeated Rivier College (1-1 overall),
17-1, in a six-inning game before topping Mount Saint Mary College,
N.Y. (0-2 overall), 5-1, in a standard, seven-inning affair.
Junior Cara Swerdlow (Bloomfield,
N.J./Bloomfield) pitched a complete game against Rivier,
which was stopped early under the NCAA eight-run rule.
Swerdlow struck out 10 batters and surrendered
just four hits and two walks.
The Crusaders, meanwhile, piled up 15 hits and 11 walks, led by
senior catcher Kelli Holota (Spring Lake,
N.J./Livingston), who went 4-for-4 with a double, three
runs batted in and two runs scored.
In the same game, teammate and junior infielder Brennan
Balfour (Cape Elizabeth, Maine/Cape Elizabeth) went
1-for-3 with a homerun, and junior infielder/pitcher Kim
Rubino (Parsippany, N.J./Parsippany) went 1-for-2 with a
double, three walks, three RBI and two runs scored.
Freshman Sarah Hoffman (Laceyville, Pa./Wyalusing
Valley) pitched a complete game against Mount Saint Mary,
allowing just six hits and no walks while striking out seven
batters.
SU's sophomore infielder Kate Reese (Wellsboro,
Pa./Wellsboro Area) went 2-for-2 in that game with a
double and two RBI. Teammate and junior infielder Shelly
Landis (Souderton, Pa./Christopher Dock Mennonite) went
1-for-3 with a double, an RBI and a run. Holota
drove in a run with a sacrifice fly.
