SELINSGROVE, Pa. -- The Susquehanna University women's
lacrosse team won its eighth straight game, earning a hard-fought,
12-10 Landmark Conference victory over the visitors from The
University of Scranton at Sassafras Fields on April 14.
Susquehanna (9-4, 2-0 Landmark), which had scored at least 16
goals in each of its past six games, seemed poised to do the same
after taking an 8-2 lead with 17 minutes, 7 seconds still to play
in the first half.
Scranton (5-7, 0-2 Landmark) stayed close by scoring five of the
next seven goals, including the last three of the first half, but
SU still led at the break, 10-7.
The Crusaders led throughout the second half though, getting the
first goal of the latter period--and eventual
game-winner--from junior midfielder Sarah Wright
(Princeton, N.J./Princeton HS), who finished with a
game-high-tying four goals (on four shots) and four draw controls.
Wright now has 49 draw controls this year, seven
shy of Susquehanna's single-season record set by Kristen Reineke
'05 in 2005.
Freshman Emily Stankaitis (Honeoye Falls, N.Y./Honeoye
Falls-Lima) may have been the contest's true difference,
making a game-high 13 saves, including four on second-half
free-position chances, to earn the win after all 60 minutes.
Stankaitis is now 8-3 this season.
SU's sophomore attack Erin Dyer (West Caldwell,
N.J./James Caldwell) scored three goals and assisted on
another. Teammate and sophomore attack Ally Bauer
(Kinnelon, N.J./Kinnelon) scored twice and added a
game-high-tying two assists. Freshman midfielder Lindsey
Derstine (Coopersburg, Pa./Southern Lehigh) had two goals
as well and collected three draw controls.
Junior attack Kirsten Detwiler (Montchanin,
Del./Wilmington Friends) scored the Crusaders' other goal
and added one assist. Freshman defender Ainsley Rossitto
(Rocky Hill, Conn./Kingswood-Oxford) notched one assist.
Sophomore defender Brittany McCann (Glenolden,
Pa./Interboro) and sophomore midfielder Marra
Landino (Brownsville, Vt./Kimball Union Academy) tied for
the Susquehanna-high with five ground balls.
Landino also caused a game-high-tying four
turnovers, and McCann caused three. Freshman
midfielder Emily Jones (Oyster Bay, N.Y./Long Island
Lutheran) had four ground balls, and
Stankaitis had three.
