SELINSGROVE, Pa. -- The Susquehanna University softball team
tied the program record for most wins in one season by topping
visiting Drew University, 8-2, 6-0, in a Landmark Conference
doubleheader at Sassafras Fields on April 17.
Susquehanna (26-4, 6-0 Landmark) never trailed Drew (8-22, 1-7
Landmark) in either game and used early-inning scoring to decide
the outcomes.
SU's 1998 softball team finished its season with a 26-14 record
to set the old program standard for most wins. The Crusaders have
now won 18 straight games to set a new program record for the
longest overall winning streak, surpassing the school's former mark
of 16 in a row set from the end of the 1991 season and into 1992.
SU's junior infielder Brennan Balfour (Cape Elizabeth,
Maine/Cape Elizabeth) continued to put her stamp on
Susquehanna softball history by setting a new single-season
runs-batted-in record on this day. Balfour had a
1-for-2 Game 1 with two runs, two steals, an RBI, a walk and a hit
batsman. She now has 33 RBI this year, breaking the previous mark
of 32 set by SU Sports Hall of Famer Meg Sorber '89 in 1989.
Balfour went 2-for-4 in the nightcap as well
with a double and two runs scored. She has tallied 80 total bases
this season to sit just three bases shy of the school single-season
record of 83. Sarah Shaffer '07 Harrison holds the top spot right
now. Shaffer Harrison tallied 83 bases in 2006.
Susquehanna's sophomore outfielder Lisa Finizio
(Oakland, N.J./Indian Hills) scored two runs and drove in
another in a 2-for-3 first game. Finizio also had
a sacrifice bunt in the opener. Teammate and junior
pitcher/infielder Kim Rubino (Parsippany,
N.J./Parsippany) recorded a hit in two at bats and drove
in a run in Game 1. Rubino was also hit by her
10th and 11th pitches in that game.
Crusaders sophomore infielder Kate Reese (Wellsboro,
Pa./Wellsboro Area) had a 2-for-4 opener with a run, while
senior outfielder Deanna Anderson (Coal Twp., Pa./Shamokin
Area) walked twice and scored a run in a 1-for-2 first
game.
Susquehanna senior catcher Kelli Holota (Spring Lake,
N.J./Livingston) did not register a hit in Game 1 in three
at bats but still drove in three runs, scored another and
walked.
Junior Cara Swerdlow (Bloomfield,
N.J./Bloomfield) tossed a complete-game seven-hitter to
pick up her 14th win of the season, tying her for second place in
school history for single-season wins and putting her just one win
away from her own record of 15 set last season. Kristen Hogan '01
won 14 games in 1999 as well, as did SU Sports Hall of Famer Judy
Sholtis '86 in 1986. Swerdlow allowed two earned
runs and three walks in Game 1 while striking out seven batters.
Crusaders junior infielder Taylor Crawford (Matamoras,
Pa./Delaware Valley HS) went 2-for-3 in Game 2 with a run
and an RBI, while sophomore outfielder Courtney Miller
(Kendall Park, N.J./South Brunswick) hit her first career
homerun as part of a 1-for-3 Game 2. Miller also
drew a walk in the nightcap.
Finizio had an RBI single in Game 2, but it was
her defense that made the greatest impact in that game. She threw a
runner out at the plate in the first inning and then denied another
runner from stretching a single into a double in the third.
Holota recorded a double in a 1-for-3 nightcap,
while Reese was 1-for-2 with a run and walk.
Freshman Sarah Hoffman (Laceyville, Pa./Wyalusing
Valley) scattered four hits and walked just one in the
complete game to pick up her 10th win of the year.
Hoffman struck out three batters.
