SELINSGROVE, Pa. -- The Susquehanna University softball team
committed eight total errors and lost both games to The University
of Scranton, 7-1, 7-3, in a Landmark Conference doubleheader at
Sassafras Fields on April 24.
Susquehanna (27-7, 7-3 Landmark) only scored in the sixth inning
of Game 1 and the fourth inning of Game 2 and left 12 runners on
base in the twinbill. Scranton (13-13, 4-4 Landmark) capitalized on
the sloppy SU defense by plating 10 unearned runs.
SU led Scranton, 3-2, after four innings of play in Game 2 but
surrendered three runs in the top half of the fifth to give up the
lead. Senior catcher Kelli Holota (Spring Lake,
N.J./Livingston) smacked a three-run homerun in the fourth
to give the Crusaders that brief advantage. Holota
went 1-for-3 in the nightcap.
Junior infielder Brennan Balfour (Cape Elizabeth,
Maine/Cape Elizabeth) was a combined 3-for-7 on the day
with two runs scored. Balfour batted 1-for-3 in
Game 1 and 2-for-4 in Game 2.
SU's sophomore outfielder Sarah Dowzicky (Collegeville,
Pa./Germantown Academy) was the lone Crusader to have a
multi-hit Game 1, batting 2-for-3. Fellow sophomore outfielder
Lisa Finizio (Oakland, N.J./Indian Hills) recorded
one hit (in three at bats) in the nightcap and scored a run and
walked once. Finizio also had five putouts and an
assist in the doubleheader.
Junior infielder Shelly Landis (Souderton,
Pa./Christopher Dock Mennonite) walked once in each game
and recorded a hit in the opener.
SU's junior Cara Swerdlow (Bloomfield,
N.J./Bloomfield) tossed a complete Game 1 and pitched the
first five innings of Game 2 but was handed the loss in each game.
In the opener, Swerdlow surrendered 12 hits and
only three earned runs while striking out seven batters and walking
four others. In Game 2, she gave up six hits, no walks and no
earned runs.
Freshman Sarah Hoffman (Laceyville, Pa./Wyalusing
Valley) pitched the final two innings of the second game
and allowed two hits and an earned run while striking out one
batter.
