READING, Pa. -- Susquehanna University used a seven-run
seventh inning to take a 13-10 non-conference baseball win from
host Albright College at Charles Kelchner Field on April 27.
Susquehanna (17-17 overall) trailed Albright (8-24 overall),
8-4, entering the seventh, but got back-to-back homeruns from
senior catcher Don Kirkland (Kennett Square,
Pa./Unionville) and sophomore infielder Ethan
Rieker (Lancaster, Pa./Manheim Twp.) in that frame to cap
off the big half-inning.
Kirkland's homer brought home three runs. He
finished with two runs scored and a game-high four runs batted in
as part of a 3-for-5 day. Rieker went 3-for-4 and
added a sacrifice bunt.
Sophomore Jordan Thomas (Westminster, Md./Westminster
HS) earned the pitching win by throwing 2 1/3 scoreless
innings. Thomas scattered three hits and three
walks and struck out a game-high four batters after relieving
freshman Nick Torkildsen (Milford, Pa./Delaware Valley
HS).
Torkildsen threw 2 2/3 innings, allowing three
runs on three hits and a walk while notching one strikeout. He
replaced junior Joe Schurig (Westfield,
N.J./Westfield), who pitched the first three innings,
yielding five runs on nine hits and no walks.
Schurig had two Ks.
Senior Ben Leonard (Johnstown, Pa./Shade)
finished the game, pitching a two-hit ninth inning and allowing two
unearned runs. The tying run was left on deck.
SU's freshman infielder Nick Ferlise (Toms River,
N.J./Toms River North) batted 3-for-5, doubling once,
scoring twice and driving in two runs. Teammate and freshman
outfielder Corey Stirmer (Fulton, Md./Atholton)
went 3-for-6 with a double, two stolen bases and two runs.
Junior pitcher/infielder Calvin Hug (West Chester,
Pa./Unionville) was the other Crusader with a multi-hit
game. Hug went for 2-for-3 with two walks, two
runs and one RBI.
Senior infielder/catcher Chris Price (Coral Springs,
Fla./Coral Glades) batted 1-for-4 for Susquehanna with two
RBI, including a sacrifice fly, and a run.
The Crusaders' freshman outfielder Ken Kayama [Koto-Ku,
Japan/Solebury (Pa.)] and junior infielders Erik
Tuomisto (Northumberland, Pa./Shikellamy) and
Justin Portzline (Selinsgrove, Pa./Selinsgrove
Area) were all 1-for-5 with a run. Kayama
and Tuomisto also drove in a run.
Kayama doubled. Portzline was hit
by a pitch.
