SELINSGROVE, Pa. -- Susquehanna University's freshman
Matt Boyd (Camp Hill, Pa./Camp Hill) nearly went
the distance to pick up his first collegiate victory and led
Susquehanna past visiting Gettysburg College, 2-1, in a
non-conference baseball game at Harold Bollinger Field on April 28.
Boyd threw 8 2/3 innings, scattered six hits,
walked two batters and struck out three more. He held Gettysburg to
only one multi-hit inning that eventually led to its lone run of
the contest.
After Boyd retired the first two batters of the
ninth inning, he walked the final batter he faced and was relieved
by senior Ben Leonard (Johnstown, Pa./Shade).
Leonard closed the door in his only out of work to
pick up his fifth save of the season and tie the SU single-season
saves mark. Matt Springman '03 recorded five saves as well in 2001.
Susquehanna (18-17 overall) scored the first run of the game in
the second inning when an SU player was picked off at first base.
Freshman outfielder Nick Ferlise (Toms River, N.J./Toms
River North) was on third at the time and scored during
the pickoff attempt.
Gettysburg (15-21 overall) tied the game at 1 in the fourth
inning but only tallied one hit for the rest of the game. The
Bullets were retired in order from the sixth to the eighth innings.
Ferlise tied a game-high with two hits (in four
at bats), including a double to lead off the second inning.
Teammate and senior catcher Don Kirkland (Kennett Square,
Pa./Unionville) batted 1-for-4 with a double and recorded
the only run batted in.
SU's senior catcher/infielder Chris Price (Coral
Springs, Fla./Coral Glades) had a 1-for-4 day with a run
scored, while senior infielder Zack Brigman (Yardville,
N.J./Hamilton West) went 1-for-3 with a walk.
Next Games: Saturday, May 1, vs. USMMA (DH) (Landmark
Conference games), 1 p.m.
