GRANTHAM, Pa. -- Susquehanna University's junior infielder
Erik Tuomisto (Northumberland, Pa./Shikellamy)
batted 4-for-5 with a walk, a double, a homerun, two runs scored
and a game-high-tying four runs batted in, but visiting Susquehanna
lost a non-conference baseball game against Messiah College, 14-12,
at Starry Field on April 7.
Susquehanna (10-12 overall) pounded out 18 hits but left 13
runners on base. Messiah (9-11 overall) had 17 hits but left just
five men on.
The game truly went back-and-forth. The score was tied at 11
after SU plated a runner in the top of the eighth inning, but the
Falcons scored three times in the bottom of the inning to pull away
for good.
The Crusaders scored once in the ninth and brought the go-ahead
run to the plate, but a called third strike ended the game.
SU's freshman infielder Nick Ferlise (Toms River,
N.J./Toms River North) batted 4-for-6 with a double, a
stolen base and an RBI. Teammate and senior infielder Zack
Brigman (Yardville, N.J./Hamilton West) went 2-for-2 with
a walk, a steal, a sacrifice bunt and a run. Junior infielder
Geoff Hunter (Sugarloaf, Pa./Hazleton Area) was
2-for-4 with a walk, a run and an RBI.
The Crusaders' freshman outfielders Ken Kayama [Koto-Ku,
Japan/Solebury (Pa.)] and Corey Stirmer (Fulton,
Md./Atholton) both batted 2-for-5 with an RBI.
Kayama homered, was hit by a pitch and scored
three times. Stirmer walked, doubled and scored
once.
Junior infielder Justin Portzline (Selinsgrove,
Pa./Selinsgrove Area) was 1-for-2 with an RBI double.
Senior infielder/catcher Chris Price (Coral Springs,
Fla./Coral Glades) was 1-for-5. Price
walked and scored three runs. Freshman outfielder Rasheed
Stewart (Philadelphia, Pa./Germantown Friends) was 0-for-2
but walked, scored a run and drove in another.
Fellow freshman Matt Roe (Freehold, N.J./St. John
Vianney) started on the mound for the Crusaders and gave
up three earned runs on five hits over two innings.
Roe walked one batter and struck out another.
Junior Joe Schurig (Westfield, N.J./Westfield)
relieved Roe and allowed four runs on four hits
and a walk over the next two innings. Schurig
struck out one batter as well.
Sophomore Matt Lottes (Muttontown, N.Y./Long Island
Lutheran) was next. Lottes allowed just
one hit in a scoreless frame. Freshman Nick Torkildsen
(Milford, Pa./Delaware Valley HS) followed, allowing two
runs on three hits in one inning.
Senior Jeff Kirch (Morristown, N.J/Morristown)
suffered the loss by yielding three runs over the seventh and
eighth innings on four hits and a walk. Kirch
notched one K.
