SELINSGROVE, Pa. -- Freshman Michael Hickey (Yarmouth,
Maine/Yarmouth) earned a first-flight singles win and a
second-flight doubles to win lead Susquehanna University to a 7-1
non-conference men's tennis victory over visiting King's College
(Pa.) at the James W. Garrett Sports Complex on April 8.
Susquehanna (7-3 overall) swept King's (3-6 overall) in the
doubles matches on the way to its sixth straight win of the 2009-10
season, including a perfect 5-0 record this spring.
Hickey won, 6-3, 6-0, in singles and partnered
with sophomore Matthew Quadrini [Escondido,
Calif./Brunswick (Maine)] to win in doubles, 8-3.
Not to be outdone, freshman Richard Fitzsimmons
[Brielle, N.J./Loomis Chaffee (Conn.)] took a third-flight
singles match, 6-2, 6-0, and teamed with fellow freshman
Mats Haaland (Brunswick, Maine/Brunswick) to
breeze to an 8-0 win in first-flight doubles.
Junior William Mellor (Wallingford, Pa./Strath
Haven) and sophomore Grant Uber (Biglerville,
Pa./Biglerville) earned the other doubles win, battling
for a 9-7 victory in the third flight. Mellor's
fourth-flight singles match went unfinished due to rain.
SU's sophomore Alec Green (Media, Pa./Strath
Haven) and junior Bruce Osborn (Sayre, Pa./Sayre
Area) won in fifth- and sixth-flight singles,
respectively. Green fought for a 6-1, 7-6 (6-2)
win, while Osborn went 6-0, 6-3.
Osborn is now 8-0 in singles this season (and
in his career). Fitzsimmons is 7-3 in singles this
season. He and Haaland are 6-3 as a doubles
tandem--all at first-flight. Just like in singles,
Fitzsimmons is a combined 7-3 in doubles in
2009-10. The doubles team of Mellor and
Uber is 4-0 this season.
