Field Hockey Fall 3-2 at York

Box Score

YORK, Pa. – Junior Heather Moore (Columbus, N.J./Peddie) and freshman Erica Reichart (Littlestown, Pa./Gettysburg Area) teamed up to provide the offense for the Susquehanna field hockey team but it was not enough for a win as the Crusaders fell 3-2 at York on Tuesday afternoon.

Moore and Reichart recorded back-to-back goals in the first half of the action, but York's three goals in the final 11 minutes of that half marked the final scoring for both teams as the Spartans held on for the win.

SU junior goalie Erin Ferguson (Mount Laurel, N.J./Seneca) played the first 33:31 of the game before giving way to freshman Margaret Ruth (Lewisberry, Pa./Northern). Ruth played the final 36 minutes and made six saves without surrendering a goal.

Susquehanna (3-2) finished the game with 14 shots while York (3-3) took 17, including 10 in the second half, none found the back of the cage.

Reichart got the Crusaders on the board first with her third goal of the season. With 13:30 on the clock, York goalie Maggie Schlauch came up with a save on Ally Bradley's (Jamison, Pa./Central Bucks South) penalty corner shot but the ball rebounded right to Moore, who knocked it past Schlauch for the 1-0 SU lead.

Just over 11 minutes later, Moore added her second score of the game and the season when she redirected Rebecca Entwistle's (Wall Twp., N.J./Wall) pass from the left wing into the cage to help give the Crusaders a 2-0 advantage.

However, York responded with three unanswered goals of its own over an 11-minute span. The first came when Casey Lawrence redirected a corner shot with 25:50 on the clock. Five minutes elapsed before Lawrence added two more goals to pick up a hat trick with a full 35 minutes still to play and handed her team the 3-2 halftime lead.

Those five first-half goals proved to be the final ones of the game. The Crusaders took seven more shots in the second half while York managed 10, but solid play from both goalies and defenses ensured none translated into goals as the Spartans held on for the 3-2 victory.

Next game: Sept. 16 – vs. Houghton, 7 p.m. at Sass Fields
