DALLAS, Pa. – The Susquehanna men's soccer team had
its chances to put more than one goal on the board but managed just
one score in a 2-1 road loss against Misericordia on Tuesday
night.
The Crusaders (3-2) held a 15-10 edge in shots, including a
team-leading four from Shane Atha (Chester, N.J./West
Morris Central), but senior Brian Nobbs (Neshanic
Station, N.J.) was the only SU player who converted one of
those shots into a goal. Misericordia (3-2), meanwhile, was led by
Dan Pinto's two goals, one in each half, to hand Susquehanna
the loss.
SU goalie B.J. Merriam (Voorhees, N.J./Eastern
Regional) finished the night with seven saves.
With 18:50 remaining in the first half, Pinto broke the
scoreless tie on a pass up the middle from Andy Bush that Nobbs put
into the lower left corner of the net past Merriam.
Merriam closed out the half with a save, his fourth of the
night, with less than a minute to go to keep the game at 1-0.
Pinto struck again and made it a 2-0 contest with a goal less
than five minutes into the second-half action, but it SU took less
than 60 seconds to respond. Nobbs countered with his goal, the
first of his career, following an Andrew Hayes (Hoboken,
N.J./St. Peter's Prep) free kick.
Atha took two of his four shots in the final four minutes of the
second period but his first was stopped by Cougars goalie Mason
Astaneh and his second went high of the goal.
Neither team's offense found the back of the net for the
final 20 minutes of the match although SU out-shot the Cougars 7-5
in the second half. The Crusaders also held a 5-2 advantage in
corner kicks during the match.
