Box Score
SELINSGROVE, Pa. – The Susquehanna women's soccer
team could not overcome a strong Lycoming offense and fell 4-0 on
Tuesday night in Selinsgrove as Lycoming regained the rights to the
River Derby Trophy.
In the third annual River Derby game between Susquehanna and
Lycoming, the Crusaders (3-4-0) managed to double-up the Warriors
(5-1-0) in shots, 14-7, but Lycoming made its shots count thanks in
part to a four-goal performance from Kaitlin Horn.
Susquehanna was down by only one goal at halftime, but
Horn's three second-half goals put the game out of reach.
Neither team could establish any offensive threat for the first
11 minutes. Susquehanna had the first chance to score with a corner
kick attempt by senior defender Samantha Farina (Kennett
Square, Pa./Unionville) but her kick sailed too far for a
Crusaders player to handle.
Just four minutes later, the Crusaders took the first shot of the
game but the shot by senior forward Alison Chavers
(Freehold, N.J./Ranney) was saved by the Lycoming
goalkeeper.
In the 23rd minute, Horn broke through for her first
score of the night on a ball from Ashley Sitler that she split
through the defenders and past Crusaders goalie Rachel
Norbuts (Monroeville, N.J./Woodstown).
The 1-0 score held up at halftime but it was Lycoming that
grabbed the momentum coming out of the break. Horn made it 1-0
eight minutes into the final period on a header from 30 yards out
that she put past Norbuts.
It took Horn just another nine minutes to net her third goal of
the game when she stole the ball from the SU defense and won the
one-on-one battle with Norbuts.
Susquehanna could not shut down Horn, who scored her fourth and
final goal three minutes later on a free kick into the box.
The Crusaders had several opportunities to get on the scoreboard
including a shot by Angela Amato (Baltimore Md./Notre Dame
Prep) with less than 10 minutes to play that sailed high
of the goal.
Four players had multiple shots in the game for Susquehanna and
the Crusaders had an 8-0 edge in corner kicks.
